As you delve deeper into Act 1 of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you’ll encounter the lively and sassy inhabitants of Gestrel Village. This charming locale is home to a cheeky bunch of Gestrels, and although there’s the annual threat posed by a Paintress, the village’s vibrant atmosphere makes it an appealing place to stay. Among its colorful characters is Karatom, a fierce fighter who will guide you on a crucial quest.
Embarking on Karatom’s Quest for Blue Mushrooms
Upon reuniting with the enthusiastic Karatom in the Ancient Sanctuary of Gestrel Village, you’ll engage in a discussion about improving his beloved Sakapatate, which is currently seeking more power for battle. Here’s where Gustave enters the picture, suggesting that obtaining Blue Mushrooms could lead to creating a potent explosive to enhance Karatom’s weaponry. Following your earlier assistance, Gustave and the expedition team are now obligated to help Karatom acquire this vital ingredient.
Your Path to Finding the Blue Mushroom
Fortunately, locating the Blue Mushroom is straightforward and not too distant from Gestrel Village. However, if this is your initial visit, there are several steps you’ll need to complete before aiding Karatom.
Start by visiting Golgra at the Chief House, centrally located in Gestrel Village. Golgra will inform you that winning the village’s tournament is essential to gain access to Esquie’s Nest, where the coveted Blue Mushroom resides. This tournament victory will also help you travel across the second sea to confront the Paintress.
After your conversation with Golgra, there are two routes to reach the tournament arena—either be transported directly or exit the Chief House, turn right, and follow the signposts labeled ‘Arena’ to arrive at the battlefield.

Once you arrive, initiate the tournament by speaking to Limonsol, the village’s yellow Gestrel. You’ll need to face off against four opponents sequentially, selecting one member from your team for each match. The initial three challengers will be Gestrels, with a surprise fourth opponent awaiting you.
After a triumphant performance in the tournament, return to Golgra, who will now grant you passage to Esquie’s Nest along with the secret phrase: ‘Get outta my way.’ You also have the option to challenge Golgra to a duel, but be prepared for a tough fight, as this adversary is formidable at your current stage in the game.

Exploring Esquie’s Nest
After exiting Gestrel Village, return to the Overworld and pass through the now-unlocked gate leading to more exploration possibilities. Just beyond this entrance, you’ll discover a prominent portal embellished with pink and blue mushrooms; this is your gateway into Esquie’s Nest. Step inside!
Upon entering, approach Sunniso for a quick cutscene, then navigate through a narrow cave passage that opens into a spacious area adorned with colorful lanterns. Here, keep an eye out to your right and downward; you’ll spot a Mime along with a glowing pink item beneath a green lantern—this is the precious Blue Mushroom you seek!

Collect the Blue Mushroom by jumping down, taking care to avoid engaging the Mime unless you’re prepared for a challenge. After retrieving the item, you can either continue deeper into Esquie’s Nest or return directly to Gestrel Village to present the mushroom to Karatom.

Preparing for the Ultimate Challenge
Once you hand over the Blue Mushroom, Karatom will be eager for a rematch, prompting a battle against his Ultimate Sakapatate. This encounter mirrors your earlier fight with a notable twist—thanks to Gustave’s enhancements, Karatom’s creature now strikes harder and more frequently, plus it’s a solo battle this time!
To succeed against the Ultimate Sakapatate, pay attention to its multi-turn attack capability, allowing it to hit before Gustave can intervene. You’ll need to focus on executing precise parries and counterattacks. Utilizing overcharges when possible and targeting the Weak Point, specifically its shoulder, during the right moments will be crucial for victory.
Upon overcoming the Ultimate Sakapatate, you will complete Karatom’s quest, earning valuable rewards: three Polished Chroma Catalysts, one Recoat, and a brand-new Pure Outfit for Gustave.
