In Hytale, while food may not play a critical role in survival compared to other games in the genre, it remains crucial for players looking to enhance their health and stamina. Consuming food not only regenerates your health but can also boost your maximum health and stamina, leading to better overall gameplay performance. The extent of these benefits can vary based on the type of food you prepare. Ingredients such as milk and cheese are vital for crafting high-quality meals. Although these components can be relatively easy to acquire, navigating Hytale’s early access version presents some challenges.
Where to Find Milk in Hytale

Milk is sourced from cows, but you won’t find it just lying around. To gather milk, players must equip a Wooden Bucket and interact with the cows using a right-click. However, it’s important to note that as of the current game version, Hytale has yet to fully implement a functioning animal husbandry system, which can lead to various complications:
- Players currently lack the ability to tame cows.
- Cows will attempt to flee when approached by players.
- Cows can mysteriously vanish even when confined.
- A single bucket of Milk is sufficient for crafting one block of Cheese.
- Cows can only be milked once per in-game day.
Expect these issues to be resolved as Hytale continues to evolve with new updates. Despite the difficulties, with some creativity, players can successfully corral cows into pens by constructing larger enclosures using solid blocks, thus preventing them from escaping.
Crafting Cheese in Hytale

To craft Cheese, head over to a Chef’s Stove. This basic crafting station does not require upgrades, allowing players to start making Cheese immediately after acquiring Milk. The game’s recipe suggests that any type of Milk can be used, indicating potential options for sourcing milk from other animals.
While players can also milk Mosshorns, note that Mosshorn Milk is not viable for cheese-making—you’re better off drinking it yourself!
As a reminder, each unit of Cheese requires one bucket of Milk to produce. Additionally, many food recipes, such as the highly beneficial Caesar Salad, require one Cheese per dish. Though Caesar Salad is an excellent food item for healing, securing a consistent supply of Milk and Cheese is essential; otherwise, you may need to explore alternative options due to ingredient scarcity.
Pies made from fruits and vegetables can be a straightforward alternative once you establish a proper setup at your base. Remember to place fish traps near water sources to collect Salt Blocks, an essential ingredient for various recipes.
