GroupMe Update Introduces Announcement Mode and Additional Features

GroupMe continues to rank among the leading messaging applications favored by educational institutions in the US. As reported by Microsoft, over 70% of colleges in the US have adopted GroupMe for their communication needs. After a period of minimal updates, Microsoft has been actively enhancing the app in recent months.

This year, they launched GroupMe Campus, designed specifically for college students to foster meaningful relationships with their peers. The update also includes improvements to the main messaging functionality, a revamped events feature, and more. Just yesterday, Microsoft announced a significant update bringing a variety of new features and enhancements to the application.

The highlight of this update is the introduction of the new Announcement Mode. This mode allows all members of a group or Topic to react to messages and RSVP for events, while only group leaders have the ability to post messages. Group leaders can create designated Announcement groups or convert existing Topics into Announcement Topics.

In addition, the update simplifies the process of sharing GroupMe groups and events with others. After creating a group, users can now invite people by directly sharing the invite via Instagram, WhatsApp, or Snap. Furthermore, invites can now be shared directly to Instagram Stories.

GroupMe group admins and owners can now edit and delete events, regardless of who created them—a change from the previous functionality where only the event creator had these capabilities. This update also enhances the photo editing experience, giving users the ability to crop images, add text, and more when uploading pictures. Additionally, users can join an active event video call or initiate a group call directly from the top of the chat.

For iOS users, this update includes support for dark mode and tinted icons on iOS 18 as well as a new experience for joining groups.

Besides these enhancements, the GroupMe team is developing highly requested features such as the option to edit messages and further improvements to the events functionality, which are expected in the upcoming months.

GroupMe’s regular updates highlight Microsoft’s dedication to augmenting the app’s usability and overall user satisfaction. These new features are poised to further enrich the experience for its expanding user base, especially within academic settings.
