GPD is set to make waves in the gaming industry with the release of the Win 5, marking it as the first handheld gaming device to incorporate the powerhouse AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 “Strix Halo”APU. This cutting-edge chip promises performance levels comparable to an RTX 4060, positioning the Win 5 as a unique player in the portable gaming market.
GPD Win 5: Performance Benchmarks vs. RTX 4060
The anticipation surrounding the GPD Win 5 is largely due to its distinguished Strix Halo architecture. In a departure from the trend among handheld manufacturers, GPD has chosen to integrate the advanced AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395—a 16-core/32-thread Zen 5 processor renowned for its leading-edge integrated GPU capabilities, powered by the top-tier Radeon 8060S.

Testing has confirmed that the Radeon 8060S competes well against budget-friendly graphics options like the RTX 4060. Notably, the GPD Win 5 performs impressively, especially considering it operates within a constrained 70W thermal design power (TDP).Analysts have shared insights demonstrating its proximity to RTX 4060 performance, highlighted by evaluations conducted by Jobs_Bao and PureDIY on Bilibili.
Benchmarking results reveal that the Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 excels across a range of applications, including Cinebench R23 and various 3DMark tests. The chip achieved a remarkable score of 771 in single-core and 12, 678 in multi-core tests within CPU-Z, alongside an impressive 30, 495 points in Cinebench R23.

In the Time Spy graphics benchmark, the Radeon 8060S scored 9, 680 points, approximately 15% behind the RTX 4060’s score of 11, 413. This performance gap is notable yet maintains a level that allows modern gaming at 1080p resolution with high settings, which is emblematic of the GPD Win 5’s capabilities.

As evidenced by PureDIY’s showcase, the GPD Win 5 can achieve over 80 frames per second in demanding titles like “Black Myth: Wukong.”However, it’s crucial to note that the device generates considerable heat, reaching temperatures between 70-80 degrees Celsius under heavy load, primarily due to its compact design and cooling limitations. Comparatively, AYANEO is set to release their NEXT 2 model equipped with a more robust dual-fan cooling system.

The GPD Win 5 also boasts an external battery pack that easily attaches to the device, featuring a substantial 5, 170mAh capacity which, while increasing the overall bulk, significantly extends gaming time. This model requires a powerful 180W adapter for optimal performance.

On the design front, the device includes two powerful blower fans on the back, although connecting the battery pack can obstruct airflow from these exhausts. Nevertheless, the design incorporates additional vents at the top and bottom to maintain effective cooling. With a 7-inch 120Hz display and a weight of 570 grams (adding 340 grams with the battery), this device balances performance and portability.

The GPD Win 5 also comes with a docking station equipped with a USB Type-C port, HDMI output, three Type-A USB ports, and an Ethernet port, increasing connectivity options for users.

Upon its launch, the GPD Win 5 will be available in multiple configurations, starting with the AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 featuring 64GB of memory, alongside a variant equipped with the Ryzen AI MAX 385 at a more budget-friendly price point. The gaming community eagerly awaits the NEXT 2’s potential for higher performance, anticipating advancements in TDP capabilities over the Win 5.
