Google is set to enhance its Pixel 10 series with the introduction of the Tensor G5 chip, which promises a notable performance boost over its predecessor, the Tensor G4. Recent benchmark tests indicate that this new system-on-chip (SoC), produced by TSMC rather than Samsung, could deliver up to a 36% increase in compute performance. Early assessments from the Pixel 10 Pro Fold highlight this improvement, showcasing the advanced capabilities of Google’s latest silicon.
Performance Comparison with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
The Tensor G5’s performance metrics are indeed impressive, achieving commendable single-core and multi-core scores. However, it still falls short when stacked against competitors like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 and 9400+, as well as Apple’s A18 and A18 Pro. The informational gap is expected to widen with the upcoming launches of newer chipsets such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 and the next generation of Dimensity and A-series chips.
In terms of specific numbers, the Tensor G5 scores 2, 276 points in single-threaded tests and 6, 175 points in multi-threaded tests. This notable performance leap is attributed to its unique CPU configuration of ‘1 + 5 + 2′ cores, where a single high-performance core coexists with five efficiency cores. The transition to TSMC’s 3nm process technology highlights significant advancements, and as Google plans to adopt TSMC’s 2nm process for the Tensor G6, the potential for future improvements remains promising.

Additional specifications of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold include a robust 16GB of RAM and the device will run on the upcoming Android 16. Even though there’s been significant progress with the Tensor G5, some consumers may be left wanting as it doesn’t match the competitive edge seen in other flagship processors. Notably, during the Pixel 9 announcement, Soniya Jobanputra from Google’s Pixel product management team mentioned that the Tensor G4’s design philosophy prioritized enhanced user experiences rather than achieving top benchmark scores.

Ultimately, if the Pixel 10 series equipped with the Tensor G5 can deliver a user experience that rivals high-end devices powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 and Dimensity 9500, the pricing strategy will be fully justified. However, for potential buyers who are not completely convinced, it may be wise to wait for further discounts and offers before making a purchase.
