Exploring the Video Overviews Feature
As its name implies, Video Overviews allows NotebookLM users to create video summaries derived from the files and images they upload. Google showcased this capability by producing highlight videos of the I/O 2025 consumer and developer keynotes, each running for approximately nine minutes.
These engaging videos not only feature AI-generated narrations—similar to the existing Audio Overviews—but also include a rich variety of graphics, imagery, and other visual enhancements to better convey the key announcements from the events.
Real-World Application of Video Overviews
In a practical demonstration, Google generated a one-minute video recap of a field trip at a national park in California. Furthermore, a dedicated notebook for Google I/O 2025 has been established. This resource compiles YouTube videos from keynote addresses, product demonstrations, blog posts, and press releases into one accessible location.
Users can leverage this notebook to visualize announcements through mind maps, receive text briefings, and listen to AI-generated summaries. Google plans to roll out the Video Overviews feature for English-speaking users shortly.
Enhancements to Audio Overviews
In addition to the Video Overviews, NotebookLM has introduced new customization options for the length of Audio Overviews. Users can now select settings for short (~5 min), long (~20 min), or a standard (~10 min) format, allowing for tailored experiences based on individual needs. Google emphasized this flexibility: **”Try fully customizing the depth and length the AI hosts discuss your sources!”** more details.
NotebookLM’s Evolution
Two years into its development since its initial reveal as Project Tailwind, NotebookLM continues to evolve. This AI-powered tool enables users to conduct research and analyze content from various sources, including uploaded files, YouTube videos, audio files, and URLs.
NotebookLM stands out by relying primarily on the information provided in user-uploaded materials, effectively minimizing the potential for AI hallucinations and inaccuracies. Nonetheless, users are advised to remain vigilant about the tool’s findings. Originally launched as a web-only platform, NotebookLM has recently extended its reach to Android and iOS devices.
Additional Features and Fun with NotebookLM
Google has also expanded NotebookLM to include web search capabilities and enhanced its Audio Overviews feature to support over 50 languages. As users get creative with the application, some have humorously sought to prompt existential reflections in its AI podcast hosts.
