Google Launches New Search App for Windows Users
In a recent announcement, Google unveiled its innovative Google app for Windows, currently available through Search Labs. This application is designed to enhance user experience by integrating web searches with local resources, including files from Google Drive, installed software, and documents stored on the user’s Windows PC.
Seamless Access with a Simple Shortcut
The new Google app can be easily accessed by pressing the keyboard shortcut Alt + Space. Upon the first launch, users will need to sign in with their Google account. After successful authentication and granting necessary permissions, users will have the option to allow the app to access their Google Drive and local files.

Enhanced Features with Google Lens
This application integrates the popular Google Lens feature, allowing users to select and search for any visual content displayed on their screen effortlessly. This capability not only simplifies the translation of foreign language text but also enables users to leverage Google’s AI Mode for academic inquiries, making it easy to obtain quick answers by asking follow-up questions.
Insights from Google’s Product Team
Vinay Mahagaokar, Group Product Manager on the Google Search Team, shared the following insights about the app’s functionality:
“Now you can search without switching windows or interrupting your flow. Whether you’re writing in a doc or in the middle of a game, just press Alt + Space to instantly search for information from your computer files, installed apps, Google Drive files — and of course, the web.”
Current Limitations and User Eligibility
While the Google app is groundbreaking, it is still in an experimental stage and has some limitations. Notably, it is exclusively available in English for users within the United States. The following criteria must also be met to join this experiment:
- Users must be 13 years or older.
- The app is compatible with Windows 10 and above on desktop devices.
