Google Meet Unveils Comprehensive Emoji Library for Enhanced User Interaction
In a fresh update, Google has rolled out access to an extensive emoji library for users of Google Meet. This new feature enables participants to engage more dynamically with content, express their thoughts, and foster a vibrant workplace culture through a variety of emoji reactions. Notably, this feature is enabled by default for all users, giving them the flexibility to participate fully, although administrators retain the option to modify settings at various levels, including domain, Organizational Units (OUs), and specific groups.
Accessibility Across Platforms
The extensive emoji picker is available to users on both the web version and Android devices, ensuring broad accessibility. Meeting hosts and co-hosts can choose to disable this extended emoji feature using the host controls, opting instead for the traditional, limited emoji set if they prefer.
Understanding the Limitations
Even with this exciting enhancement, there are several limitations to consider. For instance, while participants using Meet Rooms hardware and Live Stream viewers can receive and view emoji reactions from the newly added collection, they cannot transmit their own reactions. To send extended reactions, users must join the meeting via companion mode on a personal device.
Additionally, the feature currently does not support the sending of extended emoji reactions from iOS devices like iPhones and iPads, although users can view reactions sent by others. It’s important to note that organizational custom emojis are not supported in this rollout.
Phased Rollout Timeline
The deployment of this emoji feature is set to proceed in stages, tailored to different audiences. Admin controls will commence rollout over a period of up to 15 days for those on Rapid and Scheduled Release domains, starting November 6. End users on Rapid Release domains will see availability over the following 15 days beginning November 19, while those on Scheduled Release domains can expect access starting December 9, with the full implementation expected to conclude within three days thereafter.
Availability and Compatibility
This new emoji feature will be accessible to users within Google Workspace plans including Business Standard and Plus, as well as Enterprise Standard and Plus. For more detailed information, users can visit the official Google Workspace updates page.
