
The Tensor G5 marks a significant advancement for Google, being the company’s inaugural system-on-chip (SoC) manufactured using a 3nm process. Moreover, this latest iteration is crafted through TSMC’s fabrication technology, a departure from previous models sourced from Samsung. Most importantly, this chipset powers the entire Pixel 10 lineup, introducing a host of enhancements.

While specific details regarding the CPU architecture of the Tensor G5 remain sparse, reports from Android Authority indicate that Google has transitioned to a ‘1 + 5 + 2′ core arrangement. This marks a notable departure from the ‘1 + 3 + 4′ configuration utilized in the Tensor G4, amplifying processing efficiency
According to Google, the Tensor G5’s CPU operates with an average performance boost of 34% compared to the Tensor G4; however, the company did not clarify whether this uptick applies to single-core, multi-core, or both performance metrics. It’s important to temper expectations when comparing this SoC to competitors like the Snapdragon 8 Elite, Dimensity 9400+, or A18 Pro, as raw performance may not favor the Tensor G5. Details about the GPU remain limited, but it has been confirmed that an updated graphics processor IP is a part of the package.
Previous insights have suggested that the CPU partners with an Imagination Technologies DXT-48-1536 unit, pending official verification. Unfortunately, the Tensor G5’s GPU appears to lack ray tracing capability, putting it at a disadvantage compared to rivals in mobile gaming, an area that has yet to see widespread adoption. Notably, Google’s commitment to AI was showcased with claims that the chipset’s tensor processing unit (TPU) is up to 60% more effective than that of the Tensor G4.
One standout feature of the Tensor G5 is the inclusion of Google’s ‘Matryoshka’ transformer model, boasting two billion effective parameters. This translates to the Gemini Nano model performing 260% faster and operating with double the efficiency for local tasks on the Pixel 10. Moreover, the token window for processing has expanded dramatically, increasing from 12, 000 in the Tensor G4 to an impressive 32, 000 in the G5, which is comparable to storing 100 screenshots. Enhancements to the image signal processor (ISP) contribute to substantially reduced blur in low-light video recordings, with 10-bit HDR now the standard for both 1080p and 4K 30FPS recording.
However, the Pixel 10 series does not support local 8K video recording, although users can still leverage Google’s cloud-based Video Boost feature for enhanced video quality. Connectivity-wise, the flagship models continue to utilize the Exynos 5400 modem for 5G capabilities.
