Introduction of Google’s New “Learning Guide”Feature in NotebookLM

Google is expanding its innovative toolkit by launching the “Learning Guide”feature for all Workspace customers who already have access to NotebookLM. This enhancement is designed to elevate your research and collaboration experience.

What is NotebookLM?

For those unfamiliar, NotebookLM is a sophisticated research and note-taking application powered by Google Gemini. It enables users to synthesize and comprehend various document types, including PDFs and Google Docs/Slides, facilitating an organized and efficient workspace.

Evolution and Popularity

Originally debuting in 2023 under the name “Project Tailwind, ”NotebookLM gained significant attention last September with the launch of its “Audio Overviews.”This feature allows users to generate conversational, podcast-like summaries from their materials, marking a notable shift in how information is consumed.

Introducing the Learning Guide

The new “Learning Guide”feature expands upon the existing capabilities of NotebookLM. Its primary goal is to foster critical thinking among users by encouraging them to analyze their materials beyond simply obtaining a quick summary or an immediate answer.

Comparative Overview: Google vs. OpenAI

This functionality may remind users of OpenAI’s Study Mode, which was introduced in July. Both tools serve as interactive learning aids, prompting users with questions that encourage deeper understanding rather than passive consumption of information. However, a significant distinction lies in their focus: Google’s Learning Guide is tailored specifically to the content of the uploaded documents, whereas Study Mode offers a broader application across various academic subjects.

Manage Access for Workspace Admins

According to Google, the availability of the Learning Guide feature will depend on settings configured within your organization’s admin console. Workspace administrators can manage access to NotebookLM through the Google Admin console, provided they possess the “Gemini Settings”administrator privilege.

Steps to Adjust Settings

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console.
  2. Navigate to the main menu and select Generative AI.
  3. Choose NotebookLM and look for the “Service status”option.

Administrators can enable or disable the feature for all users by selecting “On for everyone”or “Off for everyone.”For targeted access control, it’s possible to adjust settings for specific organizational units, such as departments, allowing for customized permissions.

Should you need to change settings for a unit that inherits from a parent group, clicking “Override”will ensure your new configurations take effect. Furthermore, access groups can be employed to fine-tune permissions across various departments. Always remember to click “Save”after making any adjustments to maintain your settings.
