Google unveils Gemini for Education with AI tools for educators and learners

Google Unveils New AI Tools for Education at ISTE 2023

At this year’s International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference, Google introduced an array of innovative AI tools specifically crafted to support both learners and educators. The highlights of this announcement center around the advanced capabilities of the Gemini platform, designed to enhance educational experiences.

Gemini for Education: Enhanced Security and Accessibility

One of the standout features is Gemini for Education, a specialized version of the Gemini app. Google assures that this tool prioritizes enterprise-level data protection, making it a secure option for educational institutions. Most notably, schools will gain access to this premium Gemini 2.5 Pro model at no additional cost under their existing Education plans, effectively granting them advanced technology without the added financial burden.

Innovations for Teachers: Gemini in the Classroom

Teachers will likely find significant value in the enhanced Gemini in the Classroom. This tool has now been made available for all Workspace for Education users free of charge and comes equipped with over 30 new functionalities. These features are tailored to streamline lesson planning and preparation, including the ability to generate vocabulary lists instantly.

Customization and Collaboration with AI Experts

In a move that underscores Google’s emphasis on personalized learning, the company is promoting the creation and sharing of Custom AI Experts. Educators can develop these bespoke Gems—specialized AI assistants—through the main Gemini app, with plans to allow sharing among users to foster collaboration and innovation within educational communities.

New Video Overviews for Engaging Learning Materials

Another exciting feature introduced is the Video Overviews, announced in last month’s I/O event. This tool enables users to create compelling educational videos from source material, currently being rolled out on NotebookLM. Initially available to students and educators aged 18 and older, these videos promise to make learning more dynamic and accessible. A sample video can be viewed here:

AI-Powered Features in Additional Tools

Several additional tools are receiving AI-enhanced capabilities, although these will be available as paid add-ons.Veo 3 in Google Vids now allows the creation of brief eight-second sound effects. Meanwhile, Gemini in Forms will facilitate quicker quiz and survey creation for teachers. Previously a feature in Workspace Labs, it is now being rolled out more broadly. This tool can even produce a quiz directly from a supplied PDF or Google Slides presentation and assist in summarizing responses.

Personalized Learning Experiences for Students

For students aged 18 and over, Google has also launched Gemini Canvas, which helps in generating personalized quizzes on a variety of subjects, enhancing their study routines. Plans to extend this feature to younger students are underway.

Expanded Access and Administration Control

Google will ensure that NotebookLM is accessible to students of all ages through their school accounts, albeit with stricter content guidelines and integrated AI literacy resources. Furthermore, administrators will retain comprehensive control over these tools in the Admin console, allowing for management of access, report viewing, and conversation monitoring using Vault, if necessary.
