Google Unveils First Developer Preview of Android 16
Google Introduces Developer Preview for Android 16
In a notable shift from its usual schedule, Google has launched the first Developer Preview for Android 16. This early release indicates a proactive approach to its development cycle, moving away from the traditional February launch to aim for a final version rollout by the second quarter of 2025.
New Features Highlighted in the Preview
This Developer Preview is primarily designed for developers, offering an early look at several upcoming enhancements. Among the key features are:
- Enhanced System Photo Picker API: This improvement aims to create a more integrated and seamless experience for users within applications.
- Revamped Health Connect: This feature enhances app capabilities by allowing secure management of medical records in FHIR format, with consent from users.
Device Support and Installation Notes
The initial Developer Preview, identified as build BP21.241018.009, includes the security patch from November 2024 and is compatible with the following Pixel devices:
- Pixel 6 and 6 Pro
- Pixel 6a
- Pixel 7 and 7 Pro
- Pixel 7a
- Pixel Fold
- Pixel Tablet
- Pixel 8 and 8 Pro
- Pixel 8a
- Pixel 9 series (including 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold)
Developers looking to test the new features can utilize the Android Emulator. For those who own compatible devices, the OS is available for download at the official Android site. It’s important to note that users currently operating on Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1 should exercise caution, as transitioning to Android 16 DP1 necessitates a complete device wipe which may result in data loss.
Future Updates and Release Timeline
Google’s roadmap includes several forthcoming Developer Previews and Beta versions of Android 16, set to roll out over the next few months. These successive updates will introduce additional features, giving developers time to test and optimize their applications. By March 2025, Google anticipates reaching platform stability, finalizing core features and APIs ahead of the public launch, which is projected for after April 2025.
