Google Enhances Scam Protection Features in Google Messages
With the rapid evolution of the internet and technological devices, scammers have also adapted, deploying increasingly sophisticated tactics. Modern phishing attacks now leverage advanced techniques such as deepfakes, voice cloning, and social engineering, making them more convincing than ever.
New Safety Features in Google Messages
In response to these growing threats, Google has announced a set of new safety features for Google Messages designed to empower users in recognizing and avoiding potential scams. One of the key enhancements includes blocking links in messages that are flagged as suspicious, helping to prevent users from inadvertently visiting malicious sites.
This feature is being rolled out globally, and users will have the opportunity to report messages incorrectly flagged as spam.
Key Verifier Tool for Enhanced Security
Alongside the new scam detection feature, Android users will soon benefit from the Key Verifier tool in Google Messages. This innovative system service is specifically tailored to safeguard users against fraud and impersonation. By scanning a QR code from trusted contacts, users can verify the public keys necessary for end-to-end encrypted communication.
To use the Key Verifier, users can select a contact and access the “Verify keys”option under Details. This feature is gradually becoming available for all Android devices running version 10 and later.
Understanding the Scam Landscape
Google’s findings reveal that around 60% of people worldwide encountered some form of scam in the past year. The company has noted that the accessibility of advanced technology is making scams increasingly plausible and malicious.
Educational Initiatives and Account Recovery
To further enhance user awareness, Google has launched an educational game called Be Scam Ready, based on inoculation theory, which immerses players in simulations of real-life scams to better prepare them for potential threats.
Google is also introducing recovery options for users who find themselves locked out of their accounts. With the new Recovery Contacts feature, users can designate friends or family to assist in account recovery. Furthermore, those who lose access to their primary device can use the “Sign in with Mobile Number”functionality, which identifies linked accounts after entering their phone number.
This process requires users to verify their identity by entering the lock screen password from their previous device, eliminating the need to remember their Google account password. This feature will also be gradually rolled out to users globally.
Observing Cybersecurity Awareness Month
In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month in the United States, Google is hosting in-person workshops focused on scam prevention and fraud awareness at Google Store locations in New York City and Mountain View on October 21 and 28, respectively.
