Winners Announced from Google’s 48-Hour Nano Banana Hackathon
Google has revealed the winners of its exhilarating 48-hour Nano Banana Hackathon, organized by Google DeepMind from September 6 to 8. Out of a staggering 832 project submissions, 50 standout innovations have been recognized, earning non-monetary rewards totaling $400, 000.
Prizes for Innovative Solutions
Each of the 50 honorees received $5, 000 in Gemini API credits, $1, 000 in Fal credits, and an impressive 11 million Eleven Labs credits, valued at about $2, 000. Additionally, Google presented a special technology award for projects demonstrating exceptional technical prowess utilizing Eleven Labs or Fal technology.
The Challenge Behind Nano Banana
Competitors were tasked with creating applications, products, or demos utilizing the Google Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model, fondly referred to as Nano Banana. This state-of-the-art image generation and editing model significantly enhances the user experience within the Gemini app, enabling creators to transform a single picture into multiple artworks or blend various images into cohesive concepts.
Fostering Creativity in the Digital Age
The hackathon encouraged participants to transcend basic text-to-image functionalities. They were challenged to innovate and develop applications that could elevate storytelling, revolutionize e-commerce, automate creative processes, and pave the way for advanced natural language photo editing solutions, as emphasized by Google DeepMind.
Special API Tier for Participants
Google introduced a dedicated tier for the Gemini API, which allowed participants to generate 20 images per minute and make up to 500 requests per project each day. Contestants were required to host their submissions on Kaggle, providing a public link and crafting a two-minute video demo that showcased the distinctive features of their applications.
Judging Criteria
Submissions were evaluated based on several criteria, including a 10% scoring for the quality of the video demonstration, while 40% focused on the innovation and “wow”factor. The remaining points allocated considered the technical execution, functionality, and potential impact of the projects.
Highlighted Innovations
In a recent social media announcement, Google spotlighted several winning entries. Among them, LifeTrace Timeline stands out as an application that transforms raw location data into a personalized diary, facilitating reflections on daily journeys.
Another noteworthy winner, ArtLens, creatively merges modern AI technology with art history to bring iconic paintings to life in real-world settings. Additionally, ForgeOne leverages an AI-driven system designed to automate and regulate high-quality creative workflows, systematically critiquing its output against professional standards.
