Google restarts Wear OS 5 update rollout for Pixel Watch 1 and 2

Google Resumes Wear OS 5 Rollout for Pixel Watches

Google has announced the continuation of the Wear OS 5 update for both the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 after an initial pause that occurred just after its October rollout. This temporary halt was necessary due to user reports of issues including unresponsive screens and unexpected blackouts.

Update Details and Availability

The tech giant revealed that the Wear OS 5 update is now included in the November 2024 software releases, which also applies to the Pixel Watch 3. For global users, the update comes with the model number AW2A.241105.012, while those in France using LTE models through Orange will see AW2A.241105.013.

Fixes and Improvements

As the Pixel Watch 1 and 2 receive the Wear OS 5 upgrade, Pixel Watch 3 users will benefit from a set of bug fixes. While Google has provided a changelog, it lacks the thoroughness seen in Verizon’s update details. The main improvements outlined for the Pixel Watch series are as follows:

Software Enhancements for Pixel Watch

The latest update includes:

  • Latest Android security patches for enhanced protection.
  • General performance and stability enhancements.
  • Resolved an uncommon issue that caused a white splash screen when accessing the watch face via the Crown.

Improvements for Pixel Watch 2 and Watch 3

The updates for these models encompass:

  • Incorporation of the latest Android security patches.
  • Overall performance and stability improvements.
  • Addressed issues, such as:
    • A rare white splash screen appearing during navigation to the watch face.
    • Non-load of watch face upon reboot.
    • Bluetooth connectivity failures due to disconnections.
    • Displaying old, completed calls as still active.

What’s Next for Pixel Watch Users?

In a surprising update, Google also mentioned that the next round of updates for all three Pixel Watch models will not occur until March 2025. As a result, users will rely on the current update for the next three to four months.
