Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) illuminate the widening gap between tech giants. Apple’s recent update to its Apple Music app showcases limited AI functionality, distinctly contrasting with Google’s innovative capabilities, which are now capable of generating entire songs from minimal input.
Apple Music Introduces AI-Driven Playlists While Google Innovates with Full Song Creation
With the recent iOS 26.4 update, Apple Music now offers users the ability to create playlists based on simple text prompts. Users can articulate their ideas or specify themes, and the app will employ AI to curate a personalized playlist accordingly.
In contrast, Google has launched its Lyria 3 model, demonstrating a more advanced level of AI. This model can generate 30-second original tracks using either textual or visual prompts, showcasing a remarkable leap in creativity. Google’s announcement highlights this functionality:
“Just describe an idea or upload a photo, like ‘a comical R&B slow jam about a sock finding their match, ’ and in mere seconds, Gemini will translate it into a high-quality, catchy track. To push the creative envelope further, you can even ask Gemini to take inspiration from something you upload.”
Although Lyria 3 is currently in the beta testing phase, the stark contrast between Google’s swift advancement in AI technology and Apple’s cautious steps is evident.
There is cautious optimism regarding Apple’s long-awaited enhancements to Siri, expected to debut this year. This revamped Siri, underpinned by Gemini’s technology, aims to introduce advanced contextual awareness and in-app functionalities. However, setbacks have been reported. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is now planning a staggered rollout of these features throughout the year instead of a comprehensive launch.
Significant upgrades are anticipated with the introduction of iOS 27, which is expected to unveil a dedicated chatbot version of Siri. This new entity will reportedly utilize Google’s TPUs and cloud infrastructure, potentially leased by Apple, and will integrate a more sophisticated version of Google’s Gemini model, known internally as Apple Foundation Models version 11. This advancement is anticipated to rival the capabilities of Gemini 3, marking a substantial leap for Siri’s functionality.
