Enhancements to Google Meet’s Chat Functionality

In an exciting development, Google is set to enhance the in-meeting messaging by integrating it with Google Chat. This upgrade, which begins rolling out on November 10, 2025, aims to simplify post-meeting access to crucial discussions.
Streamlined Access to Meeting Chats
This integration facilitates a seamless transition from in-meeting chats to ongoing conversations outside the meeting environment. Consequently, attendees will have easy access to shared resources, links, and discussion highlights after the call ends, promoting enhanced follow-through and overall productivity.
Improved In-Meeting Chat Experience
With the shift to Google Chat, users will experience a much more robust chat environment during meetings. Enhanced features, such as emoji reactions and the ability to share images and files directly within the Meet chat, will be available. Moreover, by allowing participants to share materials in Google Chat prior to meetings, users can ensure that everything is readily accessible during calls.
Eligibility and Control for Meeting Hosts
This feature will be applicable to scheduled meetings organized through Google Calendar, specifically for hosts and invited attendees within the same domain. Importantly, meeting hosts will maintain complete control over this feature, having the option to disable it in the Google Calendar event settings prior to the meeting. If the feature is disabled, participants will revert to the traditional unlinked chat format, which necessitates recording the meeting to retain chat messages.
External Attendee Access and Data Management
It’s crucial to note that external participants will only have access to the chat while in the meeting and will not be privy to any chat history before or after the call. Internal attendees will be clearly identified through indicators and banners during the meeting. Google also assures that messages retained in Google Chat will adhere to existing retention policies and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) protocols configured for Google Chat.
