Google DeepMind and Partners Revitalize The Wizard of Oz for Sphere Venue

In an unprecedented collaboration, Google DeepMind and Google Cloud have partnered with Sphere Studios, Magnopus, Warner Bros, and other notable entities to breathe new life into the iconic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. This ambitious project aims to recreate the beloved classic for the massive 160, 000-square-foot screen located at the Sphere entertainment arena in Las Vegas.

Originally released in 1939, The Wizard of Oz quickly became a hallmark of cinema, particularly lauded for its stunning use of Technicolor. The film’s vibrant hues, including the unforgettable yellow brick road and the impressive Emerald City, were achieved using a three-strip Technicolor 35mm camera, which was revolutionary for its time.

AI Technology Revolutionizes Classic Film

According to a blog post from Google, the project leveraged “specially tuned”generative AI tools, including Veo, Imagen, and Gemini. A new AI-driven “super resolution”tool was developed in collaboration with multiple teams to transform the film’s classic frames into stunning “ultra-ultra-high definition”visuals destined to captivate audiences within the Sphere venue.

Innovative Screening Experience

The Sphere itself boasts the world’s largest 16K LED screen, a pioneering feat in high-resolution technology. This expansive display envelops an audience of 17, 600, allowing for an immersive viewing experience unlike any other.

Utilizing a 102-minute version of the original film along with archival materials—including shooting scripts, production illustrations, photographs, set designs, and musical scores—Google’s teams embarked on a thorough reconstruction process. Through fine-tuning methods, they trained AI systems like Veo and Gemini on intricate details regarding the characters, settings, and the specific camera focal lengths used during original scenes.

Reimagining the Cinematic Process

In what may seem straightforward, it was far from simple for the team. Traditional filmmaking often relies on precise cuts and edits to manage scene transitions; however, the Sphere demanded a cohesive, hyper-realistic presentation that maintained all elements simultaneously. While Google considered conventional CGI to address scalability, they opted for a more innovative route. AI outpainting techniques were employed to extend backgrounds and digitally recreate characters that might not have been originally present on the same frame.

As highlighted in a press release, the team pioneered new methods of storytelling that allowed multiple characters to remain actively engaged on screen for longer durations, transforming how audiences interact with the narrative and making them feel part of this epic journey.

Powering the Project with Advanced Infrastructure

Google Cloud’s cutting-edge, scalable, and AI-optimized infrastructure was crucial in managing the enormous data and computational requirements of this film renovation. To date, over 1.2 petabytes of data have been processed throughout the project’s evolution.

In total, thousands of researchers, programmers, VFX artists, archivists, and producers from Google and their partners have collaborated tirelessly over several months to reinvigorate this cinematic gem. Moviegoers can anticipate the unveiling of The Wizard of Oz at the Las Vegas Sphere on August 28, marking a significant milestone in the marriage of technology and classic film.
