Earlier this year at the I/O 2024 developer conference, Google unveiled an exciting video search feature for Google Lens. As reported by Android expert Mishaal Rahman, this innovative feature has begun to roll out to select Android users in recent days.
For those unfamiliar, this feature allows users to ask questions about their surroundings after recording a brief video clip. During the announcement, Google elaborated:
Search has evolved beyond just typing words into a text box. Frequently, the inquiries you have pertain to the objects around you, especially those in motion. With advancements in video understanding technology, we are elevating visual search, enabling users to pose questions through video.
For instance, if you’ve purchased a vintage record player from a thrift shop and it malfunctions when switched on, with the needle wobbling oddly, searching using video eliminates the hassle of articulating your problem. You will receive an AI Overview with troubleshooting steps and resources.
You can now send a video to Google to ask questions about it!
If you open Google Lens on Android and hold down the shutter button, it’ll record a short video that you can inquire about.
If you’re in a region where AI overviews are enabled, then you’ll get an AI-generated… pic.twitter.com/qeGWy6u1TM— Mishaal Rahman (@MishaalRahman) September 30, 2024
To utilize the video search feature, simply open Google Lens on your Android device and long-press the shutter button to capture a video and pose your question. Rahman indicates that, if the AI Overviews feature is available in your area, you will receive an AI-generated response.
Google confirmed that this video search capability would initially roll out to English-speaking users in the United States before expanding to additional regions.
