Today, Google unveiled several exciting announcements pertaining to Chromebooks. On the hardware front, two new Chromebooks were introduced: the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus and the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11″. The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus stands out as the thinnest and lightest Chromebook available, powered by an Intel Core i3-10110U (Raptor Lake-R) processor, accompanied by 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
The Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11″ features a versatile design that easily transitions from laptop to tablet mode, thanks to its built-in kickstand. This device operates on a MediaTek Kompanio 838 processor, supports up to 8GB of RAM, and includes 128GB of storage.
In terms of software, Google highlighted several new Google AI features including “Help me read”and “Live Translate,”which will become available on Chromebooks in the coming months. Additionally, Google introduced the innovative Quick Insert key specifically for Chromebooks.
The Quick Insert key is a dedicated hardware button that offers a convenient menu for quick access to essential features during text editing. Google outlined the following functions for the Quick Insert key:
- Immediate access to “Help me write,”utilizing Gemini models to assist users in crafting new text, refining existing writing, or modifying tone.
- Instantly add emojis and GIFs to any text field.
- Easily browse a list of recently opened websites to add links without the need for searching, copying, and pasting between windows.
- Integrated Google Drive search enabling users to attach files, images, videos, and more directly from Google Drive, streamlining their workflow.
- Quick access to tools for simple calculations, entering specific dates, and converting units of measurement right where they are needed.
- The upcoming ability to create AI-generated images directly from the Quick Insert menu is expected next year.
The Quick Insert key is currently available on the newly released Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus. Users of existing Chromebooks can still access the Quick Insert menu via a keyboard shortcut. Next year, the Quick Insert key is set to roll out to more Chromebook and Chromebook Plus models.
Moreover, Google has introduced several OS-level enhancements for Chromebooks. The new Welcome Recap feature will assist students in picking up where they left off. Upon logging into a Chromebook, users will receive a visual overview of their last activity across any Chromebook device, allowing for seamless continuation of tasks.
Additionally, a new “Do Not Disturb“feature lets students select a specific time frame and soundscape or YouTube Music playlist to maintain focus without interruptions. Finally, the introduction of new face control functionalities allows students with motor impairments to operate their devices and input commands hands-free.
Through these updates, Google aims to enhance the overall Chromebook experience, making it increasingly robust and user-friendly, particularly for students. The blend of advanced hardware, AI-driven software features, and OS-level improvements underscores Google’s dedication to innovation within the Chromebook ecosystem.
