Google Home App Enhancements for Nest Thermostat Users

Almost a month after rolling out new camera functionalities, Google has introduced another significant update to the Google Home app, specifically for Nest Thermostat users.

Comprehensive Control for All Nest Thermostats

In an announcement on its Nest community blog, Google highlighted that for the very first time, all Nest Thermostat models released since 2015 can now be fully managed via the Home app. This enhancement transforms Google Home into a centralized hub for overseeing various climate devices, including temperature monitors, air conditioning units, fans, humidifiers, and more.

New Hot Water Management Features

The update includes the much-anticipated hot water management capabilities for the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen UK/EU and the Nest Thermostat E, specifically for European users. This feature, previously accessible only through the Nest app, allows seamless control over water heating systems.

Context of Recent Changes

This development comes on the heels of Google’s earlier decision to discontinue the launch of new Nest Thermostats in Europe, citing challenges in supporting diverse hardware and software requirements. Nevertheless, several hot water management features are now rolling out in the Google Home app, with the updates expected to be fully available over the next few weeks.

Scheduling and Boost Features

With the new hot water schedule feature, users can manage On/Off boilers linked to the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen UK/EU. The system can be programmed to heat water automatically based on user-defined timings and days.

Additionally, the hot water boost feature enables users to access hot water on demand, even outside of their usual heating schedule, providing convenience when immediate hot water is needed.

Smart Display Improvements

The Google Home app has also received updates allowing it to show the Heat Link Temperature for the Nest Thermostat E alongside the outdoor temperature. A new button for quickly toggling Eco Mode has been added, enhancing user experience further. For users with an OpenTherm2 combi boiler, it’s now possible to adjust the hot water temperature setting directly through the app.

Simplified Interface for Easier Access

The update has streamlined access to frequently used thermostat controls, making it easier for users to find what they need quickly. Moreover, the app expands its temperature and mode settings for additional smart devices, such as smart heaters, window air conditioners, and mini-splits, connecting seamlessly via Matter and Works With Google Home partners.
