Google’s Ads Safety Report 2024: Key Enforcement Insights

In its recently published Ads Safety Report, Google has unveiled significant updates regarding its enforcement strategies for the year 2024. The tech giant has made considerable strides by suspending over 39.2 million fraudulent ad accounts, most of which were terminated before they had the opportunity to post any advertisements.

For several years, Google has been leveraging artificial intelligence to refine its advertising platform. As part of its ongoing improvements, the company introduced more than 50 enhancements to its large language models (LLMs) throughout 2024. These advancements have resulted in more efficient and accurate enforcement capabilities on a large scale.

According to Google, the performance of its LLMs surpasses that of previously utilized machine learning models, which required extensive datasets for training. The report indicates that Google took drastic measures by blocking or removing over 5.1 billion rogue ads in 2024. These advertisements were found in violation of multiple policies covering abuse of the ad network, non-compliance with legal standards, and misrepresentation of services.

One alarming trend highlighted in the report is the rise of impersonation of public figures. This threat does not only exist in Google’s advertising network but also extends to other Google-owned platforms like YouTube, where AI tools can create content that mimics the voice or appearance of popular creators.

Strengthened Policies and Account Management

In response to rising scams, Google has revised its misrepresentation policy and established a dedicated team of over 100 experts to investigate and counteract these fraudulent activities. As a result, the company has permanently suspended more than 700, 000 advertiser accounts involved in scams, leading to an impressive 90% reduction in such reports.

In 2024, Google also restricted over 9.1 billion ads due to their legally or culturally sensitive nature.
