If you find yourself browsing your spam folder to find emails from non-spammers, there is a solution. You can create an allow list in Gmail that includes your trusted senders.
You can prevent legitimate senders from sending spam one at a time, which is handy for the current email you’re viewing. But by creating a filter, you can add safe senders to the list in advance so that their emails don’t end up in spam.
Create a Gmail Allow List Filter
You can create a filter for your allow list using your current email or by setting up a filter from scratch. Visit Gmail on the web and sign in with your Google account to get started.
Create filter from email
If you’re reading an email from a sender you want to add to your allowed list, you can create a filter and easily add other senders to it.
With the email open, select the three dots for “More” at the top right. Select “Filter similar messages” from the list.
You will then see a popup containing the sender’s email address in the “From” field. If you want to add other people to the list, enter the email addresses separated by commas. When you’re done, click “Create Filter” at the bottom.
Then check the box Never send to spam. Optionally, you can mark other actions and apply the filter to any existing conversations in your inbox.
Click “Create Filter” to customize the filter.
Create a filter from scratch
If you’d like to create your filter from scratch, select the gear icon in the top right corner of Gmail and select “View All Settings” from the sidebar.
Go to the “Filters and blocked addresses” tab and click “Create a new filter”.
In the pop-up window, enter the email addresses of the safe senders separated by commas. Then click “Create Filter”.
Select the Never send to spam box. You can flag other activities if you like and apply the filter to existing conversations.
Select “Create Filter” to customize the filter.
Edit the filter to add more safe senders
If you have a filter on your allow list, you can add more people to it over time. Instead of creating another filter, you can simply update an existing one.
Select the gear icon in Gmail and select “View All Settings” from the sidebar. Then go to the “Filters and Blocked Addresses” tab.
To the right of the permission list filter, select Edit.
Enter additional email addresses in the From field, separated by commas. Then select Continue.
If you want to make other changes to the actions, you can do so. When you’re done, click Update Filter.
Add safe senders one at a time
You can also prevent the sender from being marked as spam in one-off situations. Select the “Spam” label from the menu on the left.
Open the email and click “Report not spam” at the top. The email is then returned to your inbox.
Creating an allow list in Gmail ensures that emails from trusted senders make it to your inbox. To learn more, learn how to forward certain emails or how to tag and move emails. You can do both automatically using Gmail filters.
