Google’s Gemini: The New AI Assistant Set to Replace Google Assistant
Google is on the verge of transitioning from Google Assistant to its innovative AI solution, Gemini, with the change anticipated to unfold later this year. Following this shift, the Google Assistant app will be removed from the Play Store, rendering it unavailable on user devices. Recently, Gemini has introduced two significant features: Canvas and Audio Overviews.
New Features Enhancing User Experience
The Canvas feature empowers users to edit and annotate documents or code, providing instantaneous updates for collaborative engagements. In contrast, the Audio Overviews feature transforms written content into engaging audio discussions, akin to podcasts, making it easier for users to consume information on the go.
Accessibility without Sign-In
Recent updates reported by 9To5Google indicate that Google has made Gemini accessible without the need for a sign-in. Previously, using Gemini required a Google account, but this restriction has been lifted, allowing broader access to the AI assistant.
Using Gemini in Incognito Mode
Users can now launch Gemini in Incognito Mode without needing to log in. Visiting gemini.google.com now takes users directly to the chat interface, replacing the former landing page with a welcoming message: “Meet Gemini, your personal AI assistant.”
Model Options and Limitations
Upon selecting the model picker, users will find choices beyond the default Gemini 2.0 Flash, including experimental models like 2.0 Flash Thinking, Deep Research, and Personalization. However, access to these additional models still necessitates signing in with a Google account, ensuring the default functionality remains focused on the Gemini 2.0 Flash model for those who are using it without logging in.
Additional Features Still Require Account Login
For features such as file uploads, document sharing, and chat history access, users must log in with their Google account. Notably, the Android app continues to require a sign-in to utilize Gemini AI, maintaining a level of exclusivity for comprehensive features.
