Google Finalizes AI Glasses Development with HTC as Contract Manufacturer; Launch Date Still Yet to Be Determined

The market for AI glasses is on the verge of significant growth, presenting a unique opportunity for exploration and expansion. Google, leveraging its robust capabilities within the Android ecosystem, is poised to launch its innovative smart glasses. Despite earlier reports indicating the company’s lack of interest in developing its own eyewear, recent updates suggest that Google has finalized the development of these futuristic spectacles, enlisting several manufacturers to bring this device to life.

Spike in Smart Glasses Shipments: A 110% Increase in H1 2025 Signals Competitive Landscape Changes

According to IT Home, the research and development phase of Google’s smart glasses has reached completion. However, the company is still deliberating whether to release the product to the public. The prototype design was crafted by Quanta, with HTC serving as the contract manufacturer given its proficiency in AI glasses production, particularly with its own model, the VIVE Eagle, which comes equipped with a Chinese LLM and competitive specifications.

With a functional supply chain in place, all that remains is for Google to activate its entry into this competitive market, which is currently led by Meta. Data from Counterpoint Research reveals that global shipments of smart glasses surged by 110% year-over-year in the first half of 2025, mainly driven by the popularity of the Ray-Ban Meta model. Specifically, AI smart glasses comprised 78% of total shipments during this period, a significant rise from 46% in H1 2024 and 66% in H2 2024.

These statistics elucidate a significant opportunity for emerging players in the market. As of the first half of 2025, Meta controls a substantial 73% share. When Google decides to unveil its version, the integration with the Android XR platform is expected to enhance flexibility and improve user experience. Users transitioning from smartphones to head-mounted wearables will find comfort in the familiarity of their existing Android interfaces.
