Expanded Language Support for Gemini in Google Drive
Google has made a significant upgrade to its Gemini feature in Google Drive by vastly enhancing its language capabilities to interact with folders. This follows last year’s introduction of folder functionality within the Gemini side panel, aimed at improving user experience.
Enhancements to Gemini’s Folder Functionality
Initially, Gemini allowed users to engage with AI regarding specific files to obtain summaries or ask pertinent questions. This latest development builds on that functionality, enabling Gemini to not only engage with individual files but also summarize and comprehend the contents of entire folders. With this expansion, Google aims to make this valuable feature accessible to a broader audience beyond English speakers.
Language Availability
The ability to understand and summarize folder contents is now supported in over 20 languages, broadening access for users around the globe. The newly supported languages include:
- Arabic
- Catalan Valencian
- Central Standard Swedish

- German
- Greek
- Hungarian
- Indonesian
- Italian

User Interaction with Gemini
Per Google’s official announcement, Gemini is designed to analyze and respond to queries regarding text documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, and presentations within the selected folders. Users can initiate this feature by:
- Clicking the “Summarize this folder”button once a folder is selected.
- Right-clicking the folder and selecting “Ask Gemini.”
- Dragging and dropping a folder into the Gemini side panel.
- Using @-mentions for folders in the text box of the panel.
- Clicking the Gemini icon next to a folder during a search.
Accessing the Feature
This advanced capability is available to users on specific Google Workspace plans, such as Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and individuals with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on. Furthermore, customers subscribed to Google One AI Premium will also have access, along with users who purchased the now-discontinued Gemini Business or Gemini Enterprise add-ons prior to January 15, 2025.
Rollout Timeline
Google has revealed that the expanded language support will be rolled out gradually. For Rapid Release domains, the rollout began on May 12, 2025, while Scheduled Release domains are set to start the rollout on May 27, 2025. The complete rollout for both categories might take up to 15 days, ensuring that all users can eventually access this enhanced functionality.
