Google Expands eSignature Capabilities to PDF Files in Google Drive
In a significant enhancement to its productivity tools, Google has broadened the functionality of its eSignature feature, originally launched for Google Docs earlier this year, to include the ability to request electronic signatures on PDF files stored within Google Drive. This move simplifies the signing process for various types of official contracts, catering to users who demand speed and convenience.

For those unfamiliar, an eSignature, or electronic signature, serves as a digital counterpart to a handwritten signature. Key Features of Google’s eSignature
The updated eSignature feature provides several user-centric capabilities:
- Multi-user Requests: Users can request signatures from multiple individuals, even if they do not have Gmail accounts.
- Status Tracking: Users can easily monitor the status of pending signature requests and access completed contracts.
- Template Management: The feature supports contract templates, which facilitates repeated eSignature requests.

Custom Fields and Signing Options
According to a recent announcement from Google, the eSignature tool supports custom fields such as phone number, job title, and company information. Recipients can conveniently sign contracts using either desktop or mobile devices, making the process highly accessible.

Google Workspace administrators hold the reins when it comes to enabling or disabling the eSignature feature via the Google Admin Console. It is important to note that once a signature request is initiated on a PDF file, it becomes locked and cannot be altered, although users can still manage its location within their Drive.
Rollout Timeline and Availability
The rollout of eSignature support for PDF files is happening gradually, and this functionality will be available to select Google Workspace tiers, including:

- Enterprise (Starter/Standard/Plus)
- Essentials and Enterprise Essentials Plus
- Education Plus
- Individual subscribers
