Google Drive Enhances Gemini Functionality with New File Selection Feature
In an exciting development for users of Google Drive, the platform is rolling out an update to its Gemini side panel. This enhancement allows users to specify which files should be utilized by Gemini when generating responses based on user prompts. Previously, the AI assistant could summarize entire folders or multiple documents, but this latest update provides a new layer of customization and control.
Revamped Interaction with AI in Google Drive
About two months ago, Google launched AI-driven “nudges” within Google Drive, providing quick access buttons on the homepage and specific folders. These features enable users to effortlessly request summaries or ask questions regarding their files. Additionally, the Gemini side panel, which offers a chat window to engage directly with the AI, was introduced to various Google Workspace applications last June, including Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Gmail, and Chat.
How the New File Selection Works
Utilizing the new feature is straightforward. Users can type their questions into the Gemini side panel and click the newly added “Add sources”button to select which files Gemini should reference for providing answers. Alternatively, users can simply drag and drop files directly into the side panel, allowing for a more streamlined conversational experience.

Rollout Schedule and Availability
This valuable update began deploying on May 1, 2025, for Rapid Release domains, with a broader rollout slated for May 14, 2025, for Scheduled Release domains. Google has indicated that it may take up to 15 days after the rollout starts for the feature to become available to all users.
Access Requirements for Gemini Features
The availability of this feature hinges on the user’s Google Workspace plan or specific add-ons. It is accessible to users on Google Workspace Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, as well as customers who have subscribed to Gemini Education or its Premium variant. Additionally, Google One AI Premium subscribers and those who previously purchased Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons will also have access. To take advantage of this functionality, Workspace administrators must activate “Workspace smart features and personalization” for their users.
