Google Classroom Introduces New Feature to Reduce Teachers’ Workloads

The Ongoing Challenge of Teacher Workloads

Across the globe, educators often voice concerns regarding heavy workloads and the stress associated with their roles. Recognizing this challenge, Google has made strides in alleviating some of this burden for teachers utilizing Google Classroom through innovative features.

Introducing the ‘Grade All’ Feature

In a move to streamline the grading process, Google recently launched a new feature called ‘Grade all’. This useful addition follows the enhancements made in 2023, which included a variety of grading options, and the introduction of a ‘missing’ grade feature in 2024. The latest functionality allows educators to efficiently assign grades to multiple students simultaneously on the Gradebook page, thereby overriding any previous or unassigned grades.

Benefits of Bulk Grading

According to Google, the ‘Grade all’ function not only saves significant time by eliminating the tedium of entering individual grades one by one, but it also accommodates specific grading scenarios that prioritize completion over accuracy. This is particularly valuable for activities like exit tickets, quick tasks, and in-class assignments, where teachers may need to assign a binary score—either a ‘0′ or a ‘100′.

“Not only does this update save time by eliminating the need to enter each student’s grade one-by-one, but it also provides a solution to grading assignments based on completion rather than accuracy (such as exit tickets, due nows, classwork, etc.) where the grade is binary (‘0′ or ‘100′).”

How to Access the ‘Grade All’ Feature

This new functionality is set to impact end users directly, with administrators lacking the ability to disable it. To utilize this feature, educators should navigate to Google Classroom, select Gradebook, and then click on the three-dot menu associated with an assignment. From there, they can choose ‘Grade all’, enter the desired bulk grade, and optionally select options to override existing grades and automatically return the new grades to students after grading.

Teachers can anticipate the rollout of this feature in the coming days, heralding a more efficient grading process designed to ease their workload.
