Google has introduced a suite of new performance-enhancement features for its proprietary web browser, Chrome. The centerpiece of this update is the new Performance Detection Tool, designed to help users identify any potential performance bottlenecks and offer actionable solutions.
For example, this optional feature—which can be disabled in the settings—detects when additional open tabs are affecting the load speed of your primary tab. In such cases, it may prompt you to close resource-intensive tabs to boost performance.
Users will receive a “performance issue alert”notification, and by clicking “Fix now,”they can seamlessly enhance their browsing efficiency. Furthermore, Chrome’s Memory Saver feature has been revamped to include three operational modes: Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum.
According to a blog post by Google, the Moderate mode frees up tabs based on your system’s needs, while the Balanced mode considers both your system requirements and browsing habits. The Maximum mode, on the other hand, “deactivates tabs quicker when they are not being actively used compared to the other two settings.”
It’s worth mentioning that the Memory Saver feature allows Chrome to release memory from inactive tabs, which can then be reallocated to other active tabs and applications on your device. Users can switch Memory Saver modes via Chrome settings under the Performance tab, as noted by the company.
Additionally, the updated Chrome settings provide further customization options for performance management. Users can choose to enable or disable visual indicators for inactive tabs and configure memory usage displays in tab hovercards. It is also possible to designate specific sites to remain active at all times to ensure that essential background tasks can continue without interruption.
On the Performance settings page within Chrome, you will find the option labeled “Always keep these sites active.”By clicking the “Add”button, you can manually input URLs to exclude from memory saving actions or select from your list of currently open tabs.
