In a recent update on their workspace blog, Google Chat revealed that it is introducing a new feature that allows users to send video messages, similar to capabilities already found on widely-used messaging apps such as WhatsApp. This enhancement is described as a means to provide users with a more effective way to connect and communicate with others.
The rollout of this video messaging feature has commenced, initially for Rapid Release domains, with expectations to extend to Scheduled Release domains starting October 25. Google has mentioned that the transition could take as long as 15 days for the functionality to be accessible on all devices.
This video messaging feature in Google Chat not only streamlines communication but also enables users to convey greater context and personalize their interactions. Google highlights several potential use cases for this feature, including:
- Team members in sales or customer support providing video updates regarding new product features or changes in customer accounts.
- Executives delivering company announcements or updates on strategies, promoting engagement and transparency throughout the organization.
- Colleagues sharing video messages regarding key updates instead of attending live meetings.
It is important to note that recording video messages is currently limited to users accessing Google Chat via web browsers; it is not supported on mobile devices. However, users can view and respond to video messages on their smartphones. Additionally, video recording is not available on certain platforms, including ChromeOS, Linux, and Firefox.
Furthermore, video messages are restricted to a maximum length of three minutes, which helps prevent overly lengthy recordings while still allowing ample time to relay important information.
To access this new video messaging feature in Google Chat, users must subscribe to one of the following Google Workspace plans:
- Business Starter, Standard, Plus
- Enterprise Standard, Plus
- Essentials Starter, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Essentials Plus
- Nonprofits
- Frontline Starter, Standard
This feature will be activated by default but can also be turned off if needed. To record a video message, users should click on the record button within the Chat compose box and select “video message.”They can then capture their message using the webcam on their computer or laptop before sending it off.
