Google Chat Unveils New Huddles Feature for Instant Meetings
In a notable evolution within collaborative communication tools, Google Chat has recently launched its own version of “huddles,”inspired by similar offerings from competitors like Slack and Microsoft Teams. Initially introduced by Slack in 2022, Huddles provided a streamlined, audio-first meeting experience, eliminating the need for traditional scheduling and invites. This capability facilitated on-the-spot meetings initiated directly from Slack channels or direct messages, enhancing spontaneity in workplace collaboration.
Building on this trend, Microsoft later rolled out its own instant meetings feature, which brings a comparable functionality to Teams users. Now, Google has jumped into the fray, releasing huddles powered by its well-known Google Meet platform. This feature allows users to seamlessly kick off audio-first meetings directly from Google Chat—available in both direct and group messages, as well as within different spaces.
Enhanced Meeting Experience with Google Huddles
The huddles feature allows users to initiate audio or video calls without the formality of traditional meeting setups. Users can engage in discussions right from their chat experience, promoting fluid communication. What’s particularly beneficial is the multitasking capability; users can adjust the huddle window according to their preferences, making it easier to balance multiple tasks simultaneously.
Interface Improvements and Accessibility
Alongside the introduction of huddles, Google Chat has also revamped its user interface. The video call button, previously located in the compose bar, has been moved to the Chat header. This adjustment simplifies the process of launching regular calls, initiating huddles, or sharing Google Meet links. Additionally, when a huddle is initiated, invited users receive a notification in their chat thread, accompanied by a “Join”button for easy access.
Availability of Huddles
The huddles feature is accessible to various Google Chat customers, specifically:
- Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Frontline Starter and Standard
- Essentials, Enterprise Essentials, and Enterprise Essentials Plus
- Nonprofit organizations
The rollout for huddles has commenced for Rapid Release domains, with plans to extend to Scheduled Release domains beginning January 6th.
