Google Introduces Gemini Side Panel in Google Chat for Enhanced Collaboration
In a significant update for users, Google has unveiled the integration of the Gemini side panel into Google Chat, aimed at facilitating improved collaboration within teams. This feature enables users to efficiently summarize, analyze, and generate content using insights gathered from various sources like emails and documents.
Expansion of the Gemini Feature
Initially launched earlier this year for multiple Google Workspace applications—including Docs, Drive, and Slides—the Gemini side panel is now available within Google Chat. Users can conveniently activate this feature by clicking on the “Ask Gemini”icon located at the top of the chat interface. Previously, users had limited access to Gemini’s summary generation for home view conversations.
Enhanced Team Collaboration
Google emphasizes that the integration of Gemini into the Chat side panel enhances teamwork by allowing users to easily catch up on missed discussions, identify actionable items, and efficiently locate critical details that may be overlooked during fast-paced exchanges. According to Google’s official blog post, this functionality represents a major leap forward in collaborative tools.
Key Features and User Prompts
The “Catch me up” feature in the side panel allows users to receive conversational summaries, alleviating the need to read through entire chat histories. Additionally, users can request specific information by using prompts such as:
- “Are there any action items for me in this conversation?”
- “What’s the decision on the project discussed?”
- “What are the key takeaways from this conversation?”
Limitations and Rollout Schedule
It’s important to note that while the generative AI capabilities of Gemini can analyze and summarize messages within the current conversation context, it does not have the capacity to cross-reference your entire chat history, Google Drive files, or Gmail inbox.
The rollout of this feature has commenced for rapid-release domains and is expected to conclude within two weeks. A wider implementation will take place starting November 18, making it accessible for Google Workspace users who have subscribed to the Gemini Business and Enterprise add-ons, as well as the Gemini Education Premium add-on.
