Google Enhances Gemini for Free Users with New Upload Features
In a recent development, Google has updated its Gemini application, enabling free users to access the file upload and analysis feature that was previously exclusive to paid Gemini Advanced tier subscribers. This change marks a significant expansion of Gemini’s capabilities, allowing more users to benefit from its enhanced functionality.
Testing the New Features
Our examination of the latest Gemini app, available on the Play Store, revealed the successful implementation of file upload and analysis options for free users. Upon the initial launch of the app, users are greeted with a prompt that encourages them to “Upload files to get quick summaries and actionable insights.”
Accessing the upload feature is straightforward; users can simply tap the “+”icon located at the bottom-left of the app interface. The recent update has introduced two new upload options—Files and Drive—complementing the pre-existing options of Camera and Gallery. According to insights from 9To5Google, these options are also available to free users utilizing the web version of Gemini.
Direct File Uploads from Google Drive
Free users can now upload files directly from the Google Drive application or website. This feature allows users to upload documents and engage with the Gemini app by asking specific questions or obtaining summaries of those documents. It’s important to note that as of now, relevant support documents have not been updated to reflect this new capability, still indicating that file uploads require a Gemini Advanced subscription.

File Upload Specifications and Limitations
While Google has not disclosed the specific limitations for file uploads among free users, it is known that Gemini Advanced users can upload a maximum of 10 files simultaneously, with each file capped at 100MB. The following formats are currently supported for upload and analysis:
Plain text files: TXT Code files including C, CPP, PY, JAVA, PHP, SQL, and HTML Document files: DOC, DOCX, PDF, RTF, DOT, DOTX, HWP, HWPX Documents created in Google Docs Tabular data files: CSV, TSV Spreadsheet files: XLS, XLSX Spreadsheets created in Google Sheets
Limited Availability of Features
In our experience of uploading a PDF file via a Galaxy S24 Ultra phone, we discovered a feature labeled “Talk Live about this.”However, it appears that the file upload and analysis capabilities are not universally accessible at this time; the feature is currently operational only with Gemini 2.0 Flash, excluding earlier versions.
