Gong Yoo Shares His Journey from a Humorous Beginning to Becoming the ‘Gatekeeper’ in Squid Game

In a recent conversation with Elle Korea, Gong Yoo opened up about his changing role in the upcoming second season of Squid Game, set to premiere in December. What began as a playful cameo concept between him and director Hwang Dong-hyuk has evolved into something more significant, with Gong Yoo portraying the intriguing “gatekeeper.”The actor reflected on this development:

“The involvement in Squid Game was initially just a joke between me and director Hwang, so I didn’t anticipate it becoming such a major project for me.”

During the first season of Squid Game, Gong Yoo made a memorable cameo as the enigmatic “Salesman.”In that capacity, his character functioned as the “gatekeeper,”ushering contestants into the perilous competition and setting the groundwork for the show’s gripping narrative.

Squid Game, a groundbreaking South Korean series, debuted globally on Netflix on September 17, 2021, rapidly attaining acclaim and widespread popularity, which resulted in numerous nominations and awards. It also made history as the first non-English and Korean show to garner four SAG Award nominations.

What led Gong Yoo to a cameo in Squid Game?

In his recent interview with Elle Korea, Gong Yoo provided details regarding his involvement in Squid Game season 2. He recounted how the idea for his character as the “gatekeeper”stemmed from a lighthearted discussion with the director during a casual meeting. Originally intended as a brief cameo, Gong Yoo regarded Squid Game as a less significant endeavor.

“I never envisioned it would escalate to this magnitude. Somehow, my role expanded within that universe, yet I still feel as if it’s a job for someone else (laughs),”Gong Yoo shared.

Considering the show’s monumental success, Gong Yoo admitted he was taken aback by its worldwide influence. Even with the expansion of his role, he feels somewhat distanced, as if it belongs to “someone else’s narrative.”He expressed his appreciation for being part of such a cherished series and strives to enhance it without overshadowing it.

Squid Game season 2 to debut this December

A newly unveiled teaser during Geeked Week 2024 highlighted the return of the menacing Front Man, portrayed by Lee Byung-hun, as well as the ruthless competition that awaits. The sneak peek features the now-iconic soldiers clad in their striking red uniforms, with the Front Man overseeing the proceedings, alongside Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, who is reluctantly donning his number 456 tracksuit.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming December 26, 2024, release, acknowledging the pressure to produce a gripping continuation while assuring fans that it will be “worth the wait.”Season 1 introduced viewers to the harrowing stakes where players risk their lives for a substantial cash reward.

In the upcoming season, Gi-hun will embark on a journey seeking clarity regarding the nefarious intentions of the organization. Director Dong-hyuk mentioned that Gi-hun’s decisions following his exit from the airport in the season one finale have laid the groundwork for the new plot, with Lee Jung-jae emphasizing that Gi-hun’s determination will take a central role, showcasing his commitment.

As per the synopsis, three years post his season one victory, Gi-hun forsakes his plans to travel to the US and re-enters the treacherous game, driven by a new purpose. The cast will see the return of Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo.
