“The involvement in Squid Game was initially just a joke between me and director Hwang, so I didn’t anticipate it becoming such a major project for me.”
During the first season of Squid Game, Gong Yoo made a memorable cameo as the enigmatic “Salesman.”In that capacity, his character functioned as the “gatekeeper,”ushering contestants into the perilous competition and setting the groundwork for the show’s gripping narrative.
Squid Game, a groundbreaking South Korean series, debuted globally on Netflix on September 17, 2021, rapidly attaining acclaim and widespread popularity, which resulted in numerous nominations and awards. What led Gong Yoo to a cameo in Squid Game?
In his recent interview with Elle Korea, Gong Yoo provided details regarding his involvement in Squid Game season 2. He recounted how the idea for his character as the “gatekeeper”stemmed from a lighthearted discussion with the director during a casual meeting. Originally intended as a brief cameo, Gong Yoo regarded Squid Game as a less significant endeavor.
“I never envisioned it would escalate to this magnitude. Somehow, my role expanded within that universe, yet I still feel as if it’s a job for someone else (laughs),”Gong Yoo shared.
Considering the show’s monumental success, Gong Yoo admitted he was taken aback by its worldwide influence. Even with the expansion of his role, he feels somewhat distanced, as if it belongs to “someone else’s narrative.”He expressed his appreciation for being part of such a cherished series and strives to enhance it without overshadowing it.
