God of War Ragnarok successfully concluded the narrative arcs established in its predecessor, God of War (2018).While it wrapped up many plot lines, the game also left opportunities for the continuation of certain character journeys. The upcoming God of War: Valhalla serves as a brief epilogue, seamlessly connecting Kratos’ Norse saga with potential future developments in the franchise.
Fans have long expressed interest in seeing Kratos confront the deities of the ancient Egyptian pantheon, a concept that resonates well given the resurgence of interest in these mythological figures in today’s media. However, this fascination comes with challenges, particularly regarding the portrayal of one notable Egyptian god.

The Rise of Marvel’s Khonshu
Khonshu, the ancient Egyptian god of the moon, is intimately linked to Marvel’s popular character, Moon Knight. Debuting in the 1980 comic Moon Knight #1, Khonshu resurrects the mercenary Marc Spector, compelling him to act as his earthly champion. Spector’s commitment to being “The Fist of Khonshu”fluctuates, yet at least one of his dissociative identities often emerges to deliver justice as Moon Knight.
Although Khonshu has been part of the Marvel landscape for over forty years, it wasn’t until recently that he gained widespread recognition. The character’s popularity surged following the release of the 2022 Moon Knight miniseries on Disney+, which, despite mixed reviews, garnered impressive viewership, even surpassing that of Hawkeye.
This influx of interest has prompted many new fans to explore Moon Knight’s extensive comic history, shedding light on Khonshu’s significant role. Additionally, the recently released game Marvel Rivals highlights Moon Knight, showcasing him as a formidable duelist and frequently referencing Khonshu in the pre-match dialogue.
Potential Comparisons with Marvel’s Khonshu
In the past, a new depiction of Khonshu by God of War could be introduced without much scrutiny. However, with the rapid evolution of Moon Knight’s popularity, any rendition of Khonshu is likely to draw comparisons to Marvel’s portrayal.
Recent rumors, circulated by @DanielRPK, suggest that Sony is casting “Middle Eastern”actors for a potential God of War game set in Egypt. Such a development would invite scrutiny over character representations, heightening expectations from fans about how Khonshu should look and interact.
A parallel can be drawn with God of War Ragnarok’s interpretation of Thor, which faced initial criticism for its design. Yet, upon experiencing the game, players appreciated the complexity of this version, which aligned perfectly with the narrative crafted by Santa Monica Studio.
While God of War has successfully navigated comparisons to the MCU in the past, introducing Khonshu could pose a unique challenge. A straightforward solution would be to omit the character entirely, thus circumventing potential pitfalls.
