We have exciting news! Glen Powell is at the forefront of reviving beloved film genres that many of us have missed. Following his contributions to studio romantic comedies and disaster movies, he is now venturing into the realm of erotic thrillers. For this, I cannot express how grateful I am to Powell.
In an exclusive announcement by The Hollywood Reporter, it has been confirmed that Powell will both star in and produce a new film titled Homewreckers. This project is based on an unpublished three-chapter story by Neil M. Paik and promises a mix of sci-fi elements married with the tension of an erotic thriller. It’s practically everything I’ve ever wished for in cinema. Currently, major studios like Lionsgate and Warner Bros. are reportedly eager to collaborate on this enticing project.
As of now, detailed information about Homewreckers remains scarce. However, it arrives at a pivotal moment in Powell’s career, as his 2025 filming calendar is shaping up with noteworthy projects, including a sequel to Edgar Wright’s The Running Man and an untitled film by J.J. Abrams, both set to shoot in London. With a spectacular year behind him, including significant roles and increased recognition, Powell’s star is undoubtedly rising.
Previously, Powell appeared in films like Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over and the series Scream Queens, but it was his role as Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick that propelled him into the spotlight. Following this breakthrough, he delivered powerful performances in Devotion and his highly anticipated film, Anyone But You, set for release in December 2023. His full slate this year also includes projects like Hit Man and Twisters, making 2024 a landmark year for the Austin, Texas native. With the addition of Homewreckers, it appears Powell’s remarkable journey is poised to continue. I wholeheartedly support his quest to resurrect the genres we all love.
Reviving the Art of the Erotic Thriller
I have often lamented the decline of erotic thrillers in contemporary cinema. The concept behind Homewreckers, as described by The Hollywood Reporter as a blend of Fatal Attraction and Ex Machina, is exactly the thrilling escapade I long to see. Growing up as a millennial in the 90s, I was surrounded by iconic films like Basic Instinct and What Lies Beneath—movies that brilliantly blended suspense with seductive undertones. Sadly, such films have become increasingly rare.
There have been attempts to label new films as erotic thrillers; however, aside from Babygirl, there has been a discernible lack of this genre’s revival. The excitement surrounding Babygirl speaks to our collective desire for such narratives, and with the announcement of Homewreckers, there’s newfound hope for the resurgence of my favorite genre.
If Glen Powell has to spearhead this renaissance himself, then so be it. He has successfully resurrected various genres, and I believe he has the capability to do the same for erotic thrillers. His foray into the sci-fi genre with The Running Man augurs well for a diverse cinematic trajectory. Until further details about Homewreckers emerge, I take solace in knowing that viewers will be treated to an impressive lineup of Powell films in the near future.
