In March, it was officially announced that a new Gintama anime is in the works, distinct from previous narratives. This project adapts a spin-off light novel series, known in Japanese as 3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei (which translates to “Teacher Ginpachi, 3rd Year Z Class”).
While fans have yet to receive extensive details, a promotional visual and a tentative 2025 release date have been shared. The concept is somewhat familiar to aficionados of the original Gintama series, as earlier episodes included humorous skits akin to those found in this new adaptation.
Excitingly, more insights will be disclosed during Jump Festa 2025, taking place later this month. Following previous announcements confirming the 2025 timeline, we may finally glean a more precise release window or even the premiere date. Viewers can also anticipate the unveiling of a new trailer.
Key Staff of the Anime Adaptation
Bandai Namco Pictures is responsible for the production of this new series. The studio has been associated with Sunrise and has been engaged with the Gintama franchise since 2016.
The anime will be directed by Makoto Moriwaki, who has previously contributed to Gintama episodes, although not in a directorial capacity (his directorial experience includes Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun). Additionally, Natsumi Higashida shares directing responsibilities, while Kazuyuki Fudeyasu and Mitei Mark II serve as lead writers.
Ginpachi-sensei Serialization Details
The storyline for this series is authored by Tomohito Osaki, with the legendary Hideaki Sorachi credited for the original material. The narrative is set in a high school environment where Gin, also known as Ginpachi Sakata, takes on the role of a teacher, surrounded by a cast of students who are fan favorites from the Gintama universe.
While Gintama has been officially licensed in the U.S. by VIZ Media, the light novel series remains unpublished in English as of now.
