Gigabyte has achieved a remarkable milestone by setting a new world record for the frequency of the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU, utilizing its X870 AORUS Tachyon motherboard.
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU Surpasses 7.3 GHz in Record Overclock on Gigabyte’s X870 AORUS Tachyon Motherboard
In a recent product launch event in Shanghai, China, renowned overclocker Hicookie, representing Gigabyte from Taiwan, established a new frequency benchmark for the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU. This achievement was made possible by the cutting-edge technologies embedded in the X870 AORUS Tachyon motherboard.

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D stands as the fastest gaming CPU currently available, thanks to its advanced 2nd Gen 3D V-Cache technology. This powerhouse features 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering impressive clock speeds of up to 5.2 GHz, along with a substantial cache of 96 MB and a thermal design power (TDP) of 120W. Under liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling, the CPU reached an astonishing frequency of 7313 MHz (7.31 GHz), marking the first time a CPU has surpassed the 7.3 GHz barrier, eclipsing the previous record of approximately 7.2 GHz.

To achieve this record-breaking overclock, certain optimizations were made: simultaneous multithreading (SMT) was disabled, and the CPU operated with 8 active cores and threads. The CPU was overvolted to 1.631V, with a bus speed of 101.57 MHz paired with a multiplier of 72. The X870 AORUS Tachyon, designed specifically for extreme overclocking, played a critical role in this feat, boasting a dual DIMM DDR5 architecture that offers superior performance for enthusiasts.
Additionally, Hicookie tested the stability of the record frequency while running a Cinebench 2024 benchmark. The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D achieved an impressive score of 1733 points in the single-core test. While this frequency was lower than the record overclock, at 6648.8 MHz, it still represents a noteworthy accomplishment, marking the highest single-core overclocking score achieved by the 9800X3D.

For context, when enabling Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO), the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D scored 1339 points in our own tests, highlighting a 29.5% increase in performance relative to the overclock. This impressive result comes with only a 25.5% increase in clock speed, showcasing the efficiency and capability of Gigabyte’s technology and Hicookie’s talent. As new updates for the AM5 socket approach, even more astounding results should be expected in the near future.
