Ghost of Yōtei: Sequel to Ghost of Tsushima Set for 2025 Release

In 2020, game developer Sucker Punch Productions released Ghost of Tsushima for Sony’s PS4 console. This critically acclaimed open-world game is set in feudal Japan and features highly praised melee combat. Earlier this year, the game was also launched in a remastered version for PC.

During today’s Sony PlayStation State of Play streaming event, it was announced that Sucker Punch is developing a new installment in the series, titled Ghost of Yōtei.

In a blog post on the official PlayStation blog, Sucker Punch explained that they aim to retain the core gameplay mechanics from Ghost of Tsushima while introducing new elements in Ghost of Yōtei. The upcoming game will follow a female protagonist named Atsu as she navigates historical Japan, spanning 300 years after the original game’s events.

The blog post shared intriguing narrative details about the new setting:

Our story unfolds in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a majestic peak located in what is now known as Hokkaido, Japan. In 1603, this region was beyond Japan’s control, characterized by vast grasslands, icy tundras, and hidden perils. This environment contrasts sharply with the structured samurai clans of Tsushima, providing a fresh backdrop for an original tale we are eager to tell.

Additionally, the blog notes that this will be the first title developed by Sucker Punch for the PlayStation 5, promising significantly enhanced graphics and immersive experiences:

We have created expansive sightlines that allow players to gaze far across the landscape, introduced stunning new skies filled with twinkling stars and auroras, and achieved more realistic interactions with wind affecting grass and vegetation, along with other improvements we plan to reveal in the future.

Ghost of Yōtei is set to release in 2025, though Sony has yet to provide a specific launch date.
