Exploring the Possibility of DLC for Ghost of Yōtei

With the recent release of Ghost of Yōtei, Sucker Punch’s co-director Jason Connell shared insights about the game during an interview with Game Informer. The conversation delved deep into the game’s characters and narrative, with a significant focus on potential additional content.

When asked about the possibility of a DLC, Connell remained open to the idea, emphasizing the value of feedback from players. He stated:

I think for us, we are at the spot in the project where we just get to put it out there and see what’s resonating with people and what people love and what people feel like they wish they maybe knew more about Atsu. And I think for us, this is like the most important part of the project, in terms of making decisions like these.[…] You get this rare opportunity to actually listen to millions of people about what resonated within a story versus maybe what didn’t or what are the holes. And I think that’s the mode that you want to be in. And that’s sort of the gift. Certainly we love Atsu, and we think it’s a great character. And just like with Jin, if there’s rooms to improve it or to bring some new elements to life or clarity for the narrative’s sake and it falls within what is best for Sucker Punch, then we’ll certainly take a hard look at that for sure.

Reflections on Previous Expansions

This willingness to adapt and respond to player feedback echoes the development process of Ghost of Tsushima, which featured the Iki Island DLC a year after its original release. This expansion allowed players to join protagonist Jin Sakai as he traveled to the island to confront a Mongolian clan led by the shaman Ankhsar Khatun. Not only did it enrich the narrative, but it also introduced new gameplay elements, including combat skills and diverse open-world activities.

A Bright Outlook for Ghost of Yōtei

Should Sucker Punch decide to develop a DLC for Ghost of Yōtei, it would likely follow a similar framework, enhancing the game’s experience while expanding on character narratives. Although Sony has yet to release definitive sales figures, early analyses from Alinea Analytics suggest that Ghost of Yōtei is performing admirably, comparable to its predecessor despite launching during a pandemic that influenced gaming trends considerably.
