For most, the primary goal is straightforward: a simple solution for storing and accessing media or photos. The UGREEN NAS 2300 provides exactly that—compact, user-friendly, and designed to eliminate the complexities typically associated with NAS devices.

At first, I anticipated a challenging setup process for the DH2300, similar to experiences with other devices. Fortunately, this was not the case; I completed the setup within thirty minutes, right from unboxing to full functionality. To begin, you only need three essentials: hard drives, a power source, and a position near your router for connectivity. Locating that suitable spot took the longest time, as my router was stashed in a cramped corner, necessitating a new arrangement.

Once plugged in and the drives installed, I navigated to find.ugnas.com, ensuring my NAS and PC were on the same network. The system automatically scanned for compatible devices. I simply selected my NAS and clicked Connect for integration.

On the initialization screen, I assigned the device a name and set up a local administrator account for management. The next step allows you to download the companion applications for mobile devices or other OS platforms.

Powerful Software Features of UGREEN

The UGREEN DH2300 interface reveals that it offers much more than basic file storage. It includes an impressive array of built-in tools that exceed the functionalities found in many custom-built NAS systems.

Among its features is a dedicated app for media storage, capable of streaming movies and videos seamlessly to smart TVs, whether they operate on Google TV or Apple TV. It mimics the services of Plex and Jellyfin without requiring extensive setup. Additionally, you benefit from a cloud drive and a backup utility.

Another standout feature is the Photos app, which organizes images by faces, locations, and scenes. It can automatically detect duplicates and assemble albums effortlessly. Sharing images is also a breeze—generate a link or QR code to send to family members without requiring them to install additional software.

Furthermore, the DH2300 operates seamlessly across operating systems including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, web browsers, and televisions. This cross-device functionality minimizes user frustrations, ensuring quick access and synchronization, aligning perfectly with user priorities.

Adequate Hardware for Everyday Use

While the DH2300 doesn’t boast the latest in processors or RAM, its 8-core Rockchip processor performs admirably. It remains responsive even during 4K streaming or large file transfers. This compact unit runs cool and quietly, utilizing considerably less power compared to a standard laptop or desktop.

I also appreciate the design, especially the top-loading hard drive bays. The front panel features indicators for power, LAN, and the two drives, with LEDs blinking to reflect activity. It includes a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port and two more USB-A ports located at the back. While a Gen 2 port would have been preferable, the Gen 1 ports suffice for most peripheral tasks, including external storage connections.

A notable downside, however, is the LAN port limitation. Unlike its more advanced sibling, the DH4300 Plus, which comes equipped with a 2.5 GbE port, the DH2300 is restricted to a 1 GbE connection.

One unexpected highlight is the operational benefits of the HDMI port, which many NAS devices feature but do not utilize effectively. With the DH2300, you can select videos through the UGREEN app and stream them directly to your TV via HDMI, supporting resolutions up to 4K at 60 Hz. Though still in beta, this feature functioned well in my trials, with minimal hiccups, aside from HDR compatibility issues with non-HDR displays.

The DH2300 is designed as an entry-level, dual-bay NAS tailored for users wanting a dependable environment for their photos, videos, work files, and media storage. It promises a straightforward setup, zero subscription costs, and ample storage flexibility for years to come.

Currently, the DH2300 is priced at $188.99. It can be purchased through UGREEN’s official website, Amazon, B&H Photo, and other prominent online retailers. Note that hard drives are sold separately and must be acquired to use the device.

For those currently investing in cloud storage, acquiring a DH2300 could be a financially wise decision. A typical 12 TB cloud plan costs around $60 monthly, summing up to over $700 each year. Opting for the DH2300 alongside two 12 TB drives keeps expenses below $400—a single upfront investment offering long-term savings.
