The AMD Ryzen 9000 and 7000 series have seen exceptional sales, making the AM5 platform the dominant choice for consumers in various regions. In this competitive landscape, AMD has established itself as the preferred brand, especially in the motherboard market.
AMD Outpaces Intel in Motherboard Sales; Rising Interest in Mid-Range Chipsets
Recent statistics illustrate a notable trend: AMD motherboards significantly outnumber their Intel counterparts in sales. Although this comes as no shock to industry observers, the specifics are revealing. AMD processors have claimed a top spot among best-selling CPUs across multiple retail platforms, leaving Intel outside the top ten. Current data indicates that AMD holds an impressive market share, surpassing 90% in many areas, solidifying the AM5 as the leading platform in the market.

According to Mindfactory’s latest motherboard sales report, which comes from a well-regarded German retailer, the AM5 platform has captured approximately 73% of the total motherboard market, with around 2, 005 units sold last week. AM4 follows with 470 units, while Intel’s LGA 1700 and LGA 1851 boards lag considerably at 185 and 70 units, respectively. This trend indicates that Intel’s Alder/Raptor Lake/Refresh processors have yet to gain traction compared to the more popular Ryzen 9000 and 7000 series.

Market shares reveal that MSI stands out as the leading motherboard manufacturer, accounting for nearly half of all units sold. MSI achieved 1, 185 sales, representing 43.4% of the market, while ASRock follows closely with 30.6%. The enduring popularity of the B650 chipset can be attributed to its seamless compatibility with both Ryzen 7000 and 9000 CPUs, competitive pricing, and widespread availability. The B850 chipset, an enhanced version of the B650, is gaining traction as well, providing support for PCIe 5.0 graphics cards.

Both B650 and B850 chipsets support CPU and memory overclocking, along with ample features for current components and devices. Consumers seeking greater upgrade flexibility are turning to the X870E option. The higher sales figures for these mid-range chipset offerings suggest that users value modern features and ease of future upgrades without incurring high costs for premium motherboard options.

As the AM5 platform supports exclusively DDR5 memory, there has been a significant transition toward DDR5 systems, with around 80% of total motherboard sales now compatible with DDR5 DIMMs. The ATX form factor continues to dominate, while micro-ATX is also prevalent among users opting for compact configurations. Overall, AMD’s revenue performance last week outpaced Intel by almost tenfold, signaling a clear market shift in favor of AMD’s superior gaming performance and other compelling features.
