Geraldine Viswanathan Addresses Questions About Her Mysterious Character in the Thunderbolts MCU Movie

Overview of Geraldine Viswanathan’s Role in Thunderbolts*

  • Geraldine Viswanathan piques audience interest by coyly declining to reveal details about her character in Thunderbolts*, stirring speculation among fans.
  • Despite her performance in You’re Cordially Invited, where she showcased her singing, Viswanathan insists her character is not a “Songbird.”
  • The character she portrays in Thunderbolts* is named Mel, prompting theories that she might be portraying Melissa Gold, also known as Songbird.

Thunderbolts* is among the most awaited Marvel Studios films set for release this year, yet the specifics of certain characters remain tightly under wraps, contributing to the film’s allure. Several actors will join forces, including Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, and Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost. Notably, Geraldine Viswanathan and Lewis Pullman are also cast members, and details about their roles are still undisclosed.

In a recent conversation with Screen Rant, Viswanathan was prompted about her character during the promotional activities for her romantic comedy, You’re Cordially Invited. The discussion highlighted a scene featuring a musical performance alongside Will Ferrell, who plays her character’s father. When asked about the possibility of identifying as a “Songbird, ”Viswanathan chuckled and shook her head, taking a moment before stating, “I have no idea what you’re talking about, ”which led to laughter from her co-star, Meredith Hagner, and the interviewer.“In this film, I sing, but I’m not a bird. That’s right.”

The interviewer remarked that her response was understandable and sheepishly admitted uncertainty about the question’s interpretation. To this, Viswanathan responded playfully, assuring that she felt quite normal despite the misunderstanding. While the details surrounding her character, referred to simply as “Mel, ”remain scarce, this has led to speculation about her potential identity as Melissa Gold, also known as Songbird.

In parallel, Lewis Pullman’s role as “Bob”has also generated intrigue, with some fans suggesting he could be Robert Reynolds, a.k.a. Sentry. However, Pullman shares Viswanathan’s reluctance to reveal more, noting, “I was as surprised as everyone else to see what is happening with [my character] Bob, and it’s all a mystery.”He further commented on the ambiguity surrounding the character, stating, “It happened so long ago, I don’t really remember exactly.”

While both Viswanathan and Pullman have remained secretive about their characters, there is significant speculation that popular theories regarding their roles may hold some truth. Viswanathan has hinted at her character’s relationship with Valentina, describing her role as a sort of “little right-hand man.”Furthermore, her collaboration with Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been a dream for her, even though their characters do not have a defined relationship in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).In the comics, however, Songbird is notably a member of the Thunderbolts, a team formed by Valentina that comprises both antiheroes and ex-villains, often engaging in morally ambiguous missions and seeking redemption.

The character Songbird, originally known as Screaming Mimi due to her sonic abilities, later transformed into a hero and became one of the prominent leaders of the Thunderbolts.

Thunderbolts* is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 2, 2025.
