George Karl confirms April Fool’s Day prank after saying he hashed things out with Carmelo Anthony
The relationship between former Denver Nuggets coach George Karl and franchise legend Carmelo Anthony has been strained since their parting in 2011. However, on Monday, Karl appeared to have made amends by discussing a plan to resolve their differences. Unfortunately, it was later revealed to be an April Fool’s Day joke.
During Denver’s 2004-05 season, Karl replaced their previous coach and became Anthony’s coach in his second year with the team. Throughout the next six seasons (2005-2010), they led the Nuggets to the playoffs every year, including a trip to the Western Conference finals in 2009. However, their successful playoff run in 2009 was the only time they were able to win a series together.
Despite Anthony’s trade request, Karl remained as the coach of the Denver Nuggets as Anthony was ultimately dealt to the New York Knicks in the middle of the 2010-11 season.
Despite not having any All-Stars on his team, the Hall of Fame coach still managed to guide the franchise to three additional playoff appearances (2011-2013). He introduced a team-oriented offensive strategy, which was a significant departure from Anthony’s individualistic scoring approach.
Despite finishing the 2012-13 season with a franchise-best 57-25 record and winning his first Coach of the Year award, Karl was fired shortly after. This was due to Denver’s fourth consecutive first-round playoff loss.
Despite appearing to leave the Nuggets for better opportunities, Anthony was never able to advance past the second round again and ultimately retired last year after a 19-season career.
Despite being a 10-time All-Star, Karl has consistently criticized Anthony for not living up to his potential. This sentiment is reflected in his 2017 memoir “Furious George: My Forty Years Surviving NBA Divas, Clueless GMs, and Poor Shot Selection,”where Karl appears to question Anthony’s drive and determination.
The speaker pointed out that there were countless instances where events occurring outside of the court took precedence over what was happening on the court.
Furthermore, earlier this year, the 72-year-old expressed his opinion that Anthony was “overrated”when the former scoring champion shared a story about their strained relationship on his podcast.
As a result, their reported intention to finally reconcile was met with much pleasant surprise.
George Karl’s tweet about reconciling with Carmelo Anthony turns out to be a prank on fans
On Monday, to everyone’s surprise, George Karl took to Twitter to announce that he and Carmelo Anthony had made plans to meet up later this month and resolve their issues.
“Good news! Josh [Kroenke], Melo and I have spoken, and we will be getting together this month to hash things out. It’s been long enough, and it’s time to move forward!! More soon,”Karl said.
Nevertheless, several hours later, the ex-coach released a subsequent tweet verifying that his first tweet was indeed an April Fool’s Day prank.
“It was an April Fool’s, but it would be pretty cool, too. Go Nuggets,”Karl said.
Therefore, it seems that supporters of the Nuggets will still have to wait for a potential reconciliation between Karl and Anthony.
