Google Unveils AI Video Generation with Gemini and Whisk

Google has introduced an exciting new feature that enables users to create AI-generated videos through the Gemini chatbot and the experimental tool known as Whisk. This advancement is driven by Veo 2, Google’s state-of-the-art video generation technology launched last year.

Harnessing Veo 2’s Capabilities

Developed by Google DeepMind, Veo 2 is already integrated into various video features, including Dream Screen for YouTube Shorts, empowering users to generate AI-assisted clips to serve as dynamic backgrounds for their Short videos. Now, with the latest Gemini update, users can take this technology further by transforming text prompts into engaging eight-second videos at 720p resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio, conveniently delivered as MP4 files.

Video Creation Limitations

In an effort to manage resource usage and prevent overwhelming their GPUs, Google has instituted a limit on the number of videos a user can generate per month. This step ensures that the feature remains accessible while maintaining performance stability.

Accessing Gemini’s Video Generation Feature

According to a blog post from Google, this new functionality is gradually rolling out to Gemini Advanced users worldwide, encompassing both web and mobile platforms in all supported languages. To utilize the feature, simply select Veo 2 from the models drop-down menu within Gemini.

Creating Custom Video Clips

Once you’ve accessed Veo 2, you can provide a descriptive text prompt to instruct the chatbot to generate a short video clip. The more detailed your description, the finer control you’ll have over the final product. Additionally, Google has integrated options for sharing the AI-generated videos easily across popular social media platforms like YouTube Shorts and TikTok.

Introducing Whisk Animate for Enhanced Creativity

In tandem with the Gemini update, Google is rolling out “Whisk Animate, ”a novel video generation feature supporting the image-to-image generator Labs experiment, accessible to Google One AI Premium subscribers. This function allows users to convert static images into vibrant eight-second video clips using Veo 2.

Marking AI-Generated Content

All videos produced using Veo 2 will carry a digital watermark known as SynthID, uniquely embedded in each frame to clearly identify them as AI-generated content to viewers.

Evolving Video Generation Landscape

The journey into generative AI began with text-based chatbots, but as advancements progress, the focus is increasingly shifting toward video capabilities. Recently, Google collaborated with key partners to recreate a classic 1939 film for an expansive 160, 000 square-foot LED screen showcased at the Las Vegas Sphere, further demonstrating the power of AI in visualization.
