Gen V and The Umbrella Academy present unique interpretations of the superhero genre, with Gen V drawing inspiration from its predecessor while showcasing a more powerful character in Amazon’s adaptation. As the conclusion of The Umbrella Academy‘s fourth season hints at a potential finale for the series, Gen V stands out as one of the leading superhero shows currently active across any platform, establishing itself as a top contender on Amazon Prime Video.
Fans of superhero narratives will likely recognize many of the powers featured in both series. Yet, each show adds a distinct flavor by introducing inventive abilities or reimagining existing ones to fit their unique narrative styles. For instance, while The Umbrella Academy includes common powers like super strength and more unconventional ones such as the ability to control crows, a notable comparison arises between two characters from the two shows.
Cate From Gen V & Allison From The Umbrella Academy Share the Same Power
Both Characters Can Manipulate the Actions and Desires of Others

Mind control is not exclusive to either series, yet both utilize it in imaginative and nuanced ways. In Gen V, Cate Dunlap’s ability necessitates physical contact—her hands must touch the skin of her target to manipulate them. Conversely, Allison Hargreeves from The Umbrella Academy can exercise her powers without needing direct contact. She simply states, “I heard a rumor…”followed by her command, influencing her victim’s thoughts or actions.
Cate Dunlap is portrayed by Maddie Phillips, while Emmy Raver-Lampman takes on the role of Allison Hargreeves. Each character encounters distinct limitations and advantages shaped by their series’ narrative frameworks. Cate, for instance, must consistently wear gloves to prevent unintentional manipulations, as her powers are in constant effect. Additionally, exerting her influence excessively can have dire physical consequences. In contrast, Allison initially enjoys full autonomy over her powers, allowing her to choose when to intervene, and her abilities do not inflict harm on her. However, later developments in the series removed her necessity to recite the phrase “I heard a rumor…”, rendering her powers less predictable.

Initially, Cate and Allison appear to have similar power levels. However, it quickly becomes evident that Cate evolves into a significantly more formidable character. At one point, Raver-Lampman’s Allison temporarily loses her voice, effectively neutralizing her abilities. On the other hand, Cate’s powers are incredibly resilient; even medication that dampens her abilities proves insufficient to halt her. When she stops her medications, the vast difference in their power becomes alarmingly apparent, showcasing Cate as a vastly more powerful mind controller when compared to Allison from The Umbrella Academy.
