Gemini Features in Google Sheets: Now Generate Fully Editable Charts

Google Sheets Enhances Charting with Gemini Features

In January, Google launched an innovative feature within Google Sheets that leverages the power of Gemini AI to facilitate the creation of charts from your datasets. Initially, users encountered a significant limitation: the generated charts were merely static images, incapable of being edited or updated when the underlying data changed. However, Google has recently upgraded this feature, allowing for full editing capabilities and real-time synchronization with your data.

Streamlined Chart Creation Process

The process for creating charts is now exceptionally user-friendly. By utilizing the Gemini side panel, you can simply enter a request like, “create a bar chart showing campaign performance by market.” Gemini will then generate the chart and place it in a new tab in your spreadsheet. This new tab grants you total control over the chart’s elements, enabling adjustments to the title, colors, and other specific details, similar to how you would customize any traditional chart.

Limitations to Note

While the new feature brings significant improvements, it is not without its limitations. A key downside is that the editable chart is linked to data residing in the new tab rather than your original source. Consequently, any updates you wish to make must be applied to the dedicated tab for the chart to reflect the latest figures. This represents a departure from the traditional Google Sheets functionality, where charts automatically update in response to changes in the source data. Moreover, Google warns that for certain more complex chart types, Gemini might revert to providing a static image, which could affect user experience.

Availability and Requirements

The rollout of this update began recently, with Google projecting that it will reach all users within one to three days. This enhancement is available to a variety of Google Workspace accounts, including Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus. Additionally, users subscribed to the Google One AI Premium plan (recently rebranded as Google AI Pro and Ultra) will also benefit from these updated features.

If you have transitioned from the now discontinued Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons (which were phased out on January 15, 2025), you will also have access to this feature. Ensure your admin has enabled the “Smart features and personalization” setting; otherwise, these enhancements will remain inactive.
