Google’s Gemini AI Makes Its Debut on Google TV
In January, prior to the CES event, Google revealed its plans to integrate the Gemini AI into various products, including Google TV. Now, this smart assistant is making its way to users, promising to enhance the viewing experience dramatically.
Redefining Voice Interaction
Google asserts that Gemini can perform all the functions of Google Assistant, but with significant advancements. Notably, it is designed for more fluid and natural conversations rather than just executing simple commands. Users can initiate queries by saying “Hey Google”or by pressing the microphone button on their remote. The notable change is that users can now ask follow-up questions seamlessly, without needing to start the interaction over.
Enhancing User Experience with Real-World Scenarios
Google provides some compelling examples showcasing Gemini’s capabilities. For instance, if a viewer can’t recall the title of a popular show, they can simply describe its premise, such as asking, “What’s the new hospital drama everyone’s talking about?”The AI will then leverage its advanced language model to identify the show. Additionally, users can request recaps of series they have fallen behind on, such as asking for an update on Outlander.

Device Availability and Future Rollout
Currently, the Gemini AI feature is exclusive to the TCL QM9K series of TVs. However, Google has confirmed that additional devices will receive this update later in the year. Future compatibility is expected with more TCL models, including the QM7K, QM8K, and X11K. Moreover, the upcoming 2025 models from Hisense, namely the U7, U8, and UX series, along with the Walmart onn.4K Pro TV and Google TV Streamer, will also support Gemini.
Competing Innovations: Microsoft and Samsung’s Copilot
In a related development, Microsoft has partnered with Samsung to introduce Copilot on Samsung TVs. Similar to Gemini, Copilot allows users to press a microphone button on the remote to pose questions. Its capabilities include delivering spoiler-free recaps, offering tailored movie recommendations, and addressing follow-up inquiries about voice actors. This feature is available on select 2025 Samsung models, including Micro RGB, Neo QLED, OLED, The Frame Pro, and more.
As TV interfaces evolve, the integration of AI assistants is transforming how viewers engage with content, creating opportunities for personalized recommendations and enhanced interaction.
