The situation on the video card market is difficult – on the one hand, the industry is struggling with a global shortage of chips, and on the other hand, interest in cryptocurrencies is constantly growing. For this reason, many users buy video cards, so manufacturers resell systems that are several years old. NVIDIA is preparing a new version of the GeForce RTX 2060 video card with 12 GB of video memory, but in the meantime it turns out that a certain Russian modder has already improved the popular chip by adding additional video memory.
Modified GeForce RTX 2060 with 12GB VRAM really works
The RTX 2060 is the most budget-friendly of the first series of NVIDIA graphics cards. ray tracing function or DLSS support (released in 2019). Recently, a lot of information has appeared on the network that the manufacturer plans to slightly improve this model, while adapting it to the current expectations of buyers.
The new, updated version of the GeForce RTX 2060 should receive twice the amount of built-in video memory – 12 GB (the predecessor had only 6 GB).
As it turned out, the Russian modder, represented on YouTube under the nickname VIK-on, who repairs graphics on a daily basis, “slightly” improved the unreferenced ASUS GeForce RTX 2060 Turbo by replacing the VRAM memory modules. It’s worth noting that this GPU model has a TU106 GPU on board paired with 6 1GB GDDR6 memory chips.
VIC-he replaced them with 2 GB of Samsung K4ZAF325BM-HC14 bones, thanks to which he got only 12 GB of memory. Obviously, these semiconductors are compatible, since the replacement was successful. These graphics card models have a certain number of compatible memory modules, which makes it quite rare to replace VRAM modules.
Nevertheless, the modder achieved the desired effect – the modified GeForce RTX 2060 works, but, as you would expect, a larger amount of the same video memory does not guarantee higher performance. The user tested the video card, among other things in Ethereum mining and, as it turned out, the hash rate is the same.
The main advantage of the modified GeForce RTX 2060 with 12GB of VRAM over the base model can be seen in applications that require more than 6GB of VRAM and in PC games, as some AAA games require more VRAM at high graphics settings.
The 12GB version of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 should be released soon – the manufacturer is expected to release this model in January 2022.
